Everything You Wanted To Know About 888 Sport’s NJ Sports Betting Site

Written By Bart Shirley on September 27, 2018

No site is 100 percent perfect. Now that 888 Sport has launched, we will tell you what’s good and not-so-good about the site.

888 sportsbook became the seventh online sportsbook to launch in New Jersey when it debuted on Sept. 10. The site held the title of the most recently-opened NJ online sportsbook for three days until BetStars NJ launched on Sept. 13.

So, here is the current list of online sportsbooks in New Jersey:

888 Sport is a unique offering to the NJ sports betting market because it is not a fledgling sportsbook operation by any stretch of the imagination. 888 Sport enjoys a massive following overseas, and this debut is just the latest chapter for the gaming giant.

And if the name sounds familiar, that’s because the online sports betting site is connected to an NJ online casino and online poker site: 888 Casino and 888 Poker. All of them are operated by 888 Holdings, which has a partnership with Caesars Atlantic City.

At this point, you can access 888 Sport NJ from a browser or via an Android device. An iOS app is not yet available.

As such, there is not very much trial-and-error with 888’s NJ online sports betting site. Still, every site has things that could improve, so here’s what works well and what doesn’t. For simplicity, we are focusing on the browser application.

What’s good about 888 Sport

888 Sport’s experience shines through from the very first moment you open the site. The company’s website design is top-notch and quite sleek.

One of the main positives is the consistent use of color as an identifier. Players know the type of gambling they’re doing simply by checking to see what color is dominant throughout the site. An orange motif signifies the sportsbook, in contrast to poker’s blue and the casino’s green.

The variety of different sports available for betting is staggering. It appears that 888 Sport accepts wagers on any sporting event of note, regardless of the sport.

So extensive is its coverage that it separates its soccer offerings into different leagues as if they are different sports altogether. As an example, two soccer leagues, La Liga and the Premier League, appear as different sports, and soccer is listed as its own sport besides these two.

Along with the variety comes some sports that seem unusual to bet. Players can wager on sports as diverse as cricket, darts, or rugby union.

Betting options

Since 888 Sport has so much experience, it does not hesitate to offer numerous types of bets to players. Visitors to 888 sportsbook will find the following bet types available to them:

  • Point spreads
  • Moneylines
  • Totals
  • Futures
  • Propositions
  • Parlays
  • Round Robins
  • Live (in-play) betting*

* This type is not the same as a live ticket. It simply means that partial game wagers are available.

One of the nice things about the layout of the site is that it integrates the sports betting section into the existing interface. Casino and poker players now find that the 888 sportsbook is just a click away.

That integration also extends to the player’s wallet onsite. A slots player who wants to throw a few bucks on the Philadelphia Eagles can do so now without much difficulty.

Deposit Options

888 Sport does offer several options for players to deposit and withdraw. It helpfully separates the methods into modes that can do both, and modes that can deposit only.

On 888 Sport, you can both deposit and withdraw using:

  • Bank transfer (ACH)
  • PayPal
  • Cash (at the Caesars casino cage)

You can also deposit only using the following methods:

  • Visa credit card
  • Visa debit card
  • MasterCard
  • Online bank transfer
  • PayNearMe (via 7-Eleven)

So, for US-based players, there are plenty of ways to get your money on and off the site. Ease of banking can be a difference-maker for many bettors.

What’s not so good about 888 Sport

The biggest problem at 888 Sport is hard to describe. All the pieces of a perfectly fine sportsbook offering are present — it’s just that those pieces are all that’s there.

The offerings in New Jersey have been dynamic in both form and function. The best sportsbooks, such as DraftKings Sportsbook or FanDuel Sportsbook, have optimized their navigation for mobile devices through their innovative betting carousels.

The top dogs also offer a live ticket system, which allows players to cash out their tickets at almost any time during the game. This flexibility allows players to hedge against last-second meltdowns or comebacks and gives them more options.

To put it another way, 888 Sport is a meat-and-potatoes sportsbook. Unfortunately, New Jersey has been eating filet mignon and caviar for over a month now.

Mobile compatibility

At this point, 888 is only available for Android users. There’s no iOS compatibility to be found. Yet.

There is a browser-based version, so Apple users can make use of it. However, a browser version is not ideal and will not optimize for mobile devices.

The good news is that iOS compatibility is likely on the way. iOS users can already play on 888 Casino’s mobile app, so it stands to reason that a release will soon.

Difficult navigation

Though the site uses tabs and drop-down menus, it is challenging to find specific information about the way things work.

Since 888 Sport has a casino and poker app alongside it, there will be more people whose first interaction with the site will be through the browser. The user experience is simply more frustrating than it needs to be. On mobile, it’s a bit more intuitive.

Some of the more important functions would be better under a quick links section. If I’m trying to move money around, for instance, I don’t want to have to remember that banking information is hidden under the “Getting Started” tab.

888 Sport will probably succeed with its brand loyalty

However, these quibbles are probably not enough to drive people away. Because the bottom line is, 888 Sport is a well-established and top-notch online sports betting site. With a well-known presence in both the online casino and poker markets, 888 will get plenty of crossover from its existing customer base.

What would be nice would be to see an established company implement some of the new innovation, but with a practiced air about its business. 888 Sport is likely better equipped to execute a live ticket system than the competition, and there would be much less of a chance that a glitch like the FanDuel debacle would occur.

Whether 888 Sport succeeds in the fledgling but rapidly flying NJ sports betting market will likely depend on what gambler’s demand of an online spor
