BetMGM Swings Into A PGA Tour Deal Ahead Of Golf Championship

Posted on August 5, 2020 - Last Updated on August 7, 2020

BetMGM became the latest to combine forces with the PGA Tour early this week. It joined DraftKings in signing a multiyear content and marketing relationship with the golf giant. And as such, it became an official betting operator of the PGA Tour.

Sportsbook involvement labels golf as the next major betting entity. It may soon take a place right behind the NFL and college football, MLB, and professional and college basketball as one of the heavy hitters for sportsbooks.

The BetMGM partnership, coming on the heels of one announced last week by DraftKings, occurred just in time for the sport’s first major championship of the year.

“We look forward to working with the PGA Tour to integrate great experiences for BetMGM customers,” said Matt Prevost, BetMGM chief marketing officer, in a press release.

“BetMGM’s advanced betting technology, combined with the PGA Tour’s world-class competitions and iconic players, will not only advance the Tour’s position at the forefront of professional sports, but the entire betting industry as well.”

More on the PGA Tour deal with BetMGM

Golf has performed admirably at NJ sportsbook apps since its summer return. Its individual nature, combined with built-in social-distancing tools, has made it a star performer with the books.

By joining the PGA Tour’s Official Betting Operator Program, BetMGM will have US rights to advertise within Tour media.

In addition, BetMGM Sportsbook platforms will be allowed to create pregame and postgame betting programs, as well as distribution highlights to users who have placed bets.

“BetMGM is part of a premium brand that is deeply connected to golf through sponsorships of various PGA Tour players and tournaments,” said Norb Gambuzza, the PGA Tour senior vice president of media and gaming.

“Through the power of the BetMGM brand and resources, this new relationship will help accelerate our sports betting strategy and enable the tour to reach new fans.”

PGA Tour betting popularity is growing

The PlayMGM brand, as it once was known, kicked off in New Jersey in 2017. Once NJ sports betting was legalized in 2018, an online sportsbook was added. Shortly thereafter, the brand name was switched to BetMGM.

Fast-forward to today, and the BetMGM app is licensed in several states, including Colorado, Indiana, Michigan and Mississippi.

The mobile app offers the latest betting odds, enhanced offers and multiple betting formats, from moneyline and point spreads to parlays and futures. And the PGA Tour is one of the most popular offerings at BetMGM Sportsbook.

Last week, DraftKings Sportsbook had announced an expansion of its multiyear content and marketing relationship designating the company as the first “Official Betting Operator of the PGA Tour.”

In terms of sports betting, golf is DraftKings’ fourth most popular sport.

And when golf icon Tiger Woods returned a couple of weeks ago after being away since February, it was a betting Mardi Gras, even if spectators could not attend the event.

There were hole-by-hole props for Woods and head-to-head matchups. He took more money at DraftKings than any other player despite being a nearly 30-1 underdog.

When Tiger is back, it’s a party.

And he’s back for the PGA Championship, which begins Thursday. It’s a tour major, and it’s going to be heavily bet.

Here are some of the DraftKings and BetMGM lines (as of 1:30 p.m. Aug. 5):

BetMGM: Expanding the prop plate

There are some great wagers to ponder at BetMGM NJ for the PGA Championship.

There is the usual leaderboard of course. Bruce Koepka is +1000, as is Justin Thomas. Rory McIlroy is +1400.

But here’s a special concept: top 5 after the first round. This is an excellent prop because it brings analysis into play. The first-round leader bet is a random crapshoot because anyone can deliver a big opening round and there are many surprises.

But the top players are usually going to put up a good score and may hit the top 5.

Koepka is +500, as is Thomas. McIlroy is +550.

And Tiger? He has props, too. Woods to make the cut is +800. And there will be more.

DraftKings and Tigermania

Do you think Tiger is ready to break out?

Golfing great Woods is 33-1 to win, +650 on the top 5 line and +335 to hit the top 10 over at DraftKings.

There is always Tigermania when he appears, so check the different hole-by-hole props along the way.
