Nets And Knicks At Opposite Ends Of Spectrum For NBA Futures At DraftKings

Posted on October 17, 2019 - Last Updated on October 16, 2019

The Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks may not have much geographical distance between them, but that proximity doesn’t apply in other ways.

In the DraftKings NBA futures for the 2019-20 season, they couldn’t be much further apart.

The star power of Brooklyn combined with the inexperience of New York fuel the narratives for both franchises. For both teams, however, surpassing the expectations could pay off.

Where the DraftKings NBA futures sit for both teams

Less than a week before the 2019-20 NBA regular season begins, neither the Knicks or Nets are favorites to win the NBA Finals. They also aren’t the favorites to reach the Finals.

Brooklyn is currently +2500 to win the Finals and +1200 to win the Eastern Conference. New York sits at +25000 and +20000 on those same bets.

The Nets have shorter odds to win the division that both teams are a part of, however, at +500. The line on the Knicks pulling the same off is +25000.

In the NBA, winning a division is irrelevant for postseason purposes, however. It has no effect on seeding for the playoffs, which is the subject of another bet at DraftKings.

Nets/Knicks playoff qualification and seeding futures

The best record in each conference in the NBA gets home-court advantage throughout the East/West playoffs. DraftKings has odds on both teams achieving that in 2019-20.

The lines, as they sit currently, are familiar. Brooklyn is +2500 while New York is +25000. DraftKings also has lines on whether either team grabs any of the eight playoffs spots in the East.

The bet is a simple question of whether the Knicks and Nets make the playoffs, yes or no. The odds are different for all four possible outcomes:

  • Brooklyn: Yes -435 No +320
  • New York: Yes +800 No -1430

As that’s completely dependent on both teams’ records, DraftKings has a projected win total for both franchises. That sits at 27.5 for the Knicks and 44.5 for the Nets currently.

Given how both teams look going into the season, those win totals could be very accurate. Brooklyn should contend while the rebuild continues for New York.

Why the win totals for both teams could be spot-on

The acquisition of forward Kevin Durant and guard Kyrie Irving could be transformational for the Nets. If guard Caris LeVert and center DeAndre Jordan play up to their potentials, Brooklyn could challenge the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers for the Eastern Conference crown.

That’s also dependent on avoiding injuries, but if things work out, 44-38 might be too pessimistic. That’s especially true if Durant can return from his right Achilles tendon rupture later this season.

Like the Nets, the Knicks need to stay healthy to have any chance to compete in 2019-20. Lacking star power, New York needs several of its roster parts to contribute more than is expected for them to get to 28 or more wins.

That could start with lottery pick forward R.J. Barrett. In the same way, the Nets will lean on Irving this season. Because of their importance, DraftKings has futures bets for both players.

MVP, Rookie of the Year and other player futures odds

Irving opens the season as an MVP candidate, albeit a long shot. DraftKings has him +5000 to be voted the 2020 MVP.

DraftKings has the same odds on him leading the league in scoring average. Irving is also +7000 to lead the league in 3-point baskets per game and +8000 to lead the league in assists per game.

The line on Barrett being selected as the 2020 Rookie of the Year is currently +600. That puts him among the favorites.

While DraftKings doesn’t expect Brooklyn or New York to be playing in the Finals this season, it would be a much bigger payday for those taking advantage of New Jersey sports betting if the Knicks reach that pinnacle.

Even those who are willing to risk their money on the Nets could see a payday, however.
