DraftKings Sportsbook’s Birthday Also Marks First Online Bet Outside Nevada

Posted on July 30, 2019 - Last Updated on July 31, 2019

DraftKings Sportsbook is celebrating another big occasion this week. Thursday will mark the one-year anniversary of when its NJ sports betting app arrived.

In fact, the date (Aug. 1) marks an even bigger milestone: the first legal online wager placed outside of Nevada.

The soft launch for DraftKings started on Aug. 1, 2018. The statewide launch followed five days later.

And things have been going quite well since. How well? Well, how about being the No. 2 sports betting operator in the Garden State.

To celebrate the occasion, DraftKings is offering customers an odds boost that cleverly ties into the company’s 365 days of being in the sports betting business. Players can now bet the New York Yankees to win the American League at +365 (was +155). It comes with a maximum $10 wager.

From launch to leader to online casino operator

New Jersey customers have clearly loved the DraftKings app right from the start. Being the only app available in the state for two weeks certainly gave it a leg up on its competitors for the first few months.

PlayMGM launched on Aug. 22, and PlaySugarHouse followed a day later. FanDuel didn’t hit the online market until Sept. 1.

But it took just one month for DraftKings to log its one-millionth bet. By the time Week 3 of the NFL season rolled around, CEO Jason Robins was talking two million wagers. And by May 2019, DraftKings had logged 17 million bets.

Plus, there is the added feature of having the DraftKings Casino integrated into the app in December 2018.

Now, a year later, DraftKings Sportsbook has logged $59,876,422 in online revenue. While some of that revenue belongs to BetStars NJ and Resorts sportsbook, the bulk is believed to be all DraftKings.

DraftKings celebrates its sportsbook milestones

DraftKings is a company that doesn’t forget about how they got to where they are in NJ. When that one-millionth bet neared, the sportsbook was quick to make it into a promo for its users: the one-millionth bettor got $10,000 in free bets.

But one of the best examples took place on May 14, 2019 — the one-year anniversary of when the US Supreme Court overturned PASPA.

To celebrate the occasion, DraftKings Sportsbook created Free Bet Day. All customers were entitled to a free wager in the amount of $5.14.

Gearing up for year two

The Boston-based operator will continue to take an outside-the-box approach with building on its current offerings.

The company has yet to share any details regarding new features coming for the 2019 football season.

Back in May, Jamie Shea, DraftKings’ head of digital sportsbook, was quick to note that what isn’t broken shouldn’t be fixed, but that doesn’t rule out innovations. DraftKings, Shea added, always has their customers in mind:

“Last January we were deciding if this is the path we were going to take. We said ‘absolutely yes.’ We wanted to give our customers the best US experience.”

The one-year anniversary of online sports betting in NJ is hard to ignore.
