It may not be worth $5 million, but Mattress Mack is about to make a sizable wager on the Houston Astros.
Tomorrow, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, a prominent furniture store owner in Texas, expects to place a $1.5 million wager online via the FanDuel Sportsbook app in New Jersey.
As he has done elsewhere in the country, McIngvale will bet on the Houston Astros to win the World Series.
As such, his wager will become the largest online bet in the short life of legalized NJ sports betting history.
Mattress Mack betting on the Astros
Earlier this month, it was reported that a large bet, potentially exceeding $5 million, was about to be placed on the Astros to win the MLB title.
According to documents submitted to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, a petition was filed related to the sports betting license at Meadowlands Racetrack — the land-based partner of FanDuel Sportsbook — to accept such a large wager.
At the time, speculation led to the belief that McIngvale was behind the bet.
The furniture store owner has offered a refund to customers who spent at least $3,000 if Houston wins the World Series. Considering his history of hedging such promotions, it made sense he was behind the large wager.
Recently, McIngvale bankrolled a $3.5 million wager in Mississippi, the largest single bet in state history, on the Astros to win the World Series. Should Houston pull it off, that one wager would pay out $11.2 million.
A week before, Mattress Mack put down $200,000 in Las Vegas for Houston to win the title. He also made smaller bets at various sportsbooks around the city.
McIngvale is obviously confident that the Astros will win their second championship in three years.
Houston’s chances of winning the World Series
According to FanDuel, and many legal sportsbooks, Houston stands as the favorite to hoist the Commissioner’s Trophy.
Houston sits at +220 to win the World Series, followed closely behind by the Los Angeles Dodgers at +280,
Aside from the New York Yankees at +450, no other American League team holds odds less than +1400 to win the league championship.
Certainly, at least the Dodgers will stand in the Astros way. Los Angeles has advanced to each of the past two World Series. Aside from the San Francisco Giants in 2012, no team has won the world championship twice in three years since the Yankees in 2000.
Per FanDuel, ahead of the AL Wild Card game, here are the futures odds of winning the World Series:
- Houston Astros +220
- Los Angeles Dodgers +280
- New York Yankees +450
- Atlanta Braves +800
- Minnesota Twins +1400
- Washington Nationals +1400
- St. Louis Cardinals +1600
- Oakland Athletics +2300
- Tampa Bay Rays +2500
