Recent NBA-MGM Partnership Results In A Free-To-Play Betting Contest

Written By Grant Lucas on October 4, 2018

The chill of autumn lingers. Halloween decorations adorn houses. Football season is in full swing. Which means the NBA season nears.

It will do so in 12 days, as the Philadelphia 76ers visit the Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder travel to the Golden State Warriors.

LeBron James has made his anticipated debut (albeit preseason) with the Los Angeles LakersKawhi Leonard had done the same with the Toronto Raptors. League executives agree, per an survey of general managers, that the Golden State Warriors will cruise to a third straight championship.

In New Jersey, not all focus should hover over the football season. Especially when it comes to NJ sports betting.

A recent free-to-play betting-style game has been launched by the NBA, presented by MGM Resorts International. And through NBA Pick ‘Em: Team Win Totals, users have the chance to score $1 million.

How does it work?

The game, while difficult to find on the NBA website, proves challenging to be sure.

To achieve the seven-figure payday, users must correctly predict the number of wins for all 30 teams in the NBA. If it’s any consolation, predictions take place in an over-under format.

The NBA and MGM list projected win totals for each team. Users then simply determine if teams will record fewer or more victories than the projections. As an example, the over-under for the dynastic Warriors sits at 64.5 wins. Will they get more wins or fewer?

Accurately predict all 30 over/unders, land a cool $1 million. The contest is not all-or-nothing. Users with at least 25 correct picks will earn a $100 gift card for the NBA Store. Picks must be submitted by 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 16 (opening night). Users must be at least 18 years old.

First sign of NBA, MGM partnership

Just before the calendar flipped to August, the NBA announced that MGM Resorts International would become the league’s first “official gaming partner.”

From the press release, the partnership would include MGM using “official NBA and WNBA data and branding” across the company’s land-based and digital sports betting offerings. In return, the NBA would promote MGM. And here we are. The first true byproduct of a groundbreaking partnership.

This contest not only attaches the MGM name (“first-ever NBA Pick ‘Em: Team Win Totals game presented by MGM Resorts) but also the company’s logo on the Pick ‘Em page.

The NBA begins warming the water for the season, which sits less than two weeks away. Additionally, with this promotion, bettors receive a reminder that football will not be the sole sport happening in the fall. Perhaps, even, the NBA is readying itself to become more involved in sports betting in the future.
