Super Bowl 2019 Prop Bets At NJ Online Sportsbooks Range From Basic To Novelty

Posted By Mike McGough on January 30, 2019 - Last Updated on April 30, 2021

With less than one week to go, the Super Bowl 2019 hype machine has kicked into overdrive.

While the 53rd edition of “The Big Game” won’t feature any New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania teams, it will be the first legal betting opportunity for local NJ residents.

As the Super Bowl continues its annual dominance as the most-watched TV program, the game is more than just a sporting event. It’s a pop-culture phenomenon.

Many companies invest in extravagant ads averaging $5 million per 30 seconds to reach the largest and most diverse audience of the year.

The interest and excitement in the Big Game also translate to enthusiasm at the betting windows. There will be an estimated $100 million wagered in New Jersey for Super Bowl 53.

While the core of the public’s gambling focus will be on standard points spread, moneyline and point totals, no other single sporting event offers the volume of betting proposition or “props” wagers quite like the Super Bowl.

What are prop bets?

Prop bets are tied to relevant outcomes within a game, and they can be based on individual player performance (Todd Gurley to rush for over/under 75.5 yards) or total team stats (Patriots to have over/under 2.5 total QB sacks).

The sportsbook then sets the line for each prop occurrence, usually charging extra “juice” on props vs. spreads/moneylines, making it easier to profit on these types of wagers.

NJ sports betting apps offer wagers from the opening “coin flip” to the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). Each NJ sports betting company approaches the number of props available a little bit differently, some offering as few as 18 options to 400 or more.

Also, with the aforementioned media and betting focus around the 2019 Super Bowl, some sports betting companies will offer promotional opportunities to their customers.

One fact to note is that the betting and promotional menus are changeable, and it’s likely that the number of betting options will increase as the Super Bowl draws closer. Let’s look at each company’s current Super Bowl betting lines, prop bets, and related promotional offerings.

DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKingsPatriots -2.556.5150+

Props of note

DraftKings Sportsbook offers a wide selection of Super Bowl prop options including bets on the coin toss.

They also have a unique over/under bet on quarterback passer rating (Goff: 90.5/ Brady: 99.5). DraftKings also will have cross-sport props tied into the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl promos

DraftKings is far and away the leader for promotional tie-ins for Super Bowl Sunday.

There will be Pools ranging from a free entry to $10, which involves correctly predicting 13 game events from coin toss to Gurley rushing yards to the color of post-game Gatorade.

They have also launched a free Super Bowl Squares contest that is available nationwide. So if you miss out on the pool at work or if you draw the dreaded “2 and 5” combo, there is another chance to get a hold of some decent numbers on the square:

That and the $600 free bet offer for the Super Bowl puts DraftKings at the top.

Props of note

PlayMGM Sportsbook in NJ offers a limited number of props.

The menu is currently basic bare-bones, similar to what one might expect to see for a non-descript Jaguars-Raiders NFL game in December.

SugarHouse Sportsbook

SugarHousePatriots -2.556.5300+

Props of note

SugarHouse Sportsbook has posted odds on the opening coin flip. There are a wide selection of individual player props around interceptions, sacks and winning the MVP.

Since SugarHouse shares the same betting tech partner (Kambi) as 888 Sportsbook, similar numbers and types of props are offered on both platforms.

Super Bowl promos

SugarHouse online does have a nice promo called the Big Game Free Bet. It could award NJ sports bettors up to $1,000 in free bets.

However, the amount of free bets each player acquires is based on non-football wagering. The 10 highest wagers are averaged out and the result is the bonus.

So, for example, a player who wagers five $70 bets and five $90 bets would receive an $80 free bet because those bets average to $80.

FanDuel Sportsbook

Props of note

FanDuel Sportsbook replicates their extensive regular-season wagering menu of game, player, and parlays for Super Bowl 2019. They have also added 100+ new props for passing, rushing, receiving, kicking and touchdowns. There are no “novelty” prop bets posted yet.

Super Bowl promos

No specific promotions offered, but they do have a mega odds boost for new players. FanDuel is offering 53:1 odds on a moneyline bet of $5 or more on either team. The resulting winnings will be paid out as site credit.

William Hill

Props of note

There is an extensive list of props available on the William Hill NJ app with some that I haven’t seen anywhere else:

  • Longest punt vs longest pass reception
  • Number of rushing attempts by Patriots James Develin (Over/Under 0.5)
  • Total offensive plays in the game (Over/Under 130.5)
  • Total players with a pass attempt (Over/Under 2.5)

Also to note, William Hill released their Super Bowl 2019 props in Las Vegas last week, a 14-page tour-de-force that identifies a prop seemingly covering everything and anything related to the game.

Included are “cross-sport” props that are truly unique and innovative:

That said, while it’s nice to sit back and ponder the number of Patriots’ punts compared to Montreal Canadiens goals, these mind-melding props are not currently part of the William Hill NJ app yet.

The Caesars Sportsbook app headlines its Super Bowl section with this fun fact banner teaser:

If this inspires one to wager on the Super Bowl, that’s great. It just made me feel really old.

Speaking of inspiration, more is needed out at Caesars as currently there are a minuscule 18 betting options offered, with 10 of these options related to alternate point spreads or totals.

There are no coin toss or MVP choices provided. It’s to be determined if Caesars will add some more options as we draw closer to Super Bowl 2019.

Props of note

888 Sportsbook NJ has posted odds on the opening coin flip. Also, there is a wide selection of individual player props around interceptions, sacks, and winning the MVP award.

Same betting tech partner as SugarHouse online sportsbook, so similar types and amounts of props are on offer.

Super Bowl promos

888 Sport is doing a Double Celebration promo that ties in its sportsbook, NJ online casino and online poker sites with a chance to get bonus cash to be used at any of its platforms.

BetStars NJ

Props of note

BetStars NJ currently is the go-to New Jersey sportsbook app for some fun and unique novelty Super Bowl prop wagers.

In addition to the opening coin flip, BetStars has posted odds on the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach:

BetStars Super Bowl 2019

Big questions as I handicap the Gatorade odds above: 1) How is purple Gatorade priced as short as 9/1. And 2) Technically, what color is lemon-lime flavored Gatorade?

Another fun BetStars NJ prop bet is based on the type of end zone celebration after the game’s first touchdown:

Props of note

PointsBet, one of the newest entrants in the NJ sports betting landscape, made headlines last week when they refunded all Saints moneyline and spread wagers after the controversial non-interference call in the Rams vs Saints NFC Championship game:

PointsBet NJ sports betting

Some nice PR and goodwill for the Aussie upstart as it looks to gain traction in New Jersey.

PointsBet offers a nice selection of more than 200 Super Bowl props across their fixed odds and PointsBetting channels. While there aren’t any coin flip or novelty props on offer, there are some unique bets posted on the PointsBet board.

  • Fantasy points over/under for select Rams and Patriots players.
  • Will any quarter be scoreless?
  • Will there be a 4th quarter comeback?
  • Total touchdowns scored (current Over/under 6.5)

Closing thoughts on Super Bowl 2019 prop bets

As Super Bowl 2019 closes in, we’ll all feel like we’re being forced to endure a weeklong pregame show.

While it may seem like an eternity from now until kickoff Sunday night at 6:30 p.m., it does give the New Jersey Super Bowl bettor ample time to figure out a betting strategy.

With 10 apps in New Jersey (Hard Rock online sportsbook only recently got off the ground), there are plenty of options to choose from.

Players should shop around and also be mindful that new prop bets will be added and new promos could come online as game day approaches.
