Iconic musical performances are few and far between, but Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock was arguably the defining moment of 1960s pop culture in the United States.
Though his death was tragic and untimely, his legacy and music live on in the beautifully-presented Jimi Hendrix Online Slot from NetEnt.
Let’s now take a closer look at the slot, available at Betfair online casino in New Jersey, that bears his name and whether it can live up to the status of a legendary figure in popular music, or hits too many duff notes.
Overview: Jimi Hendrix Online Slot
The theme of this slot is not just Jimi Hendrix but also the flower-power age of the 1960s. The Woodstock and hippy influence is central to the slot with a whole host of symbols evoking that era spread across the reels — from the CND peace symbol, to hearts, eyes, and a rather strange-looking record.
All the other key symbols in the game (other than the low symbols) pertain to the man himself. There’s his guitars (which unlock a variety of bonuses in the base game and bonus rounds).
Jimi shown playing the guitar acts as the in-game scatter (across the final three reels), while the Jimi Hendrix symbol is the in-game wild.
There’s certainly plenty to follow in the base game. With all the bonus features in operation and with a rousing soundtrack, you’ll be foot-tapping along with the reels in no time.
Who will the Jimi Hendrix slot appeal to?
However, it is not just Hendrix fans who will enjoy the game. Fans who like new features and a base game packed with additional options will certainly enjoy the game.
Check through the information tab on this slot before you start playing so you can acquaint yourself with all the offered bonuses; there are many.
Some pay more than others and some occur a lot more frequently than others, so familiarizing yourself with them before you start is a wise move.
In terms of presentation the slot looks and sounds superb. The game has an autoplay feature so you can get on with other things while the reels are spinning, and you can set the wager level at a huge range to suit any size of bankroll.
The slot itself plays well and the additional features in the base game, especially the Red Star Respin feature does liven things up. However, there’s just one big issue with this slot: No matter how much you win, you always seem to end up losing money. This is because the payouts you receive when you win are generally very small indeed.
So for all its bangs and whistles and fantastic guitar flourishes, the Jimi Hendrix slot promises so much but only rarely delivers and that is a great shame.
Special features: Jimi Hendrix Online Slot
Purple Haze feature
Red Guitar respin
Land four or more red guitars across the reels in any position and you’ll respin the reels, land more red guitars on successive spins to keep the reels spinning and your total prize increasing.
Pick and Click bonus selector
When you land three or more scatters, you enter the Pick and Click bonus selector game which clicks on speakers randomly to award you one of four bonuses:
- Crosstown Traffic free spins
- Purple Haze free spins
- Little Wing free spins
Or you can win a coin bonus of between 8x and 30x your bet.
Crosstown Traffic free spins
This entails six free spins with wild reels appearing on different reels on successive spins, moving across the reels from right to left.
Purple Haze free spins
This feature means six to 12 free spins are awarded, with all low symbols (10, J, Q, K and A) wild on the reels.
Little Wing free spins
Little Wing Free Spins entails six to 12 free spins awarded with between three and five overlay wilds appearing across the reels at random on each spin.
Presentation and sound
Quite simply, they are both wonderful — especially the sound if, like me, you are a big Hendrix fan. Having his classic songs play on a loop when you play is about as great an accompaniment to a slot as you could wish for.
The slot itself is jam-packed with features and it will take New Jersey online slots players a good while to experience them all.
From several different free spins round, to selection games, there’s a huge amount in this slot beyond the base game.
Oh my word. Have I played a slot that offers so little to a player? I don’t think I have!
From minuscule wins in the base game (some less than 1/5 of your stake) to a free spins round which was triggered after hundreds of spins and which returned me 1.8 times my original stake. Very unimpressive.
When you finally land the three scatters, you enter the pick-me game, only the software does your picks for you. I’d like the chance to make my own picks, rather than let the game decide what to pick for me.
I could understand the lower payouts on the slot if Jimi offered us a huge jackpot to be won. But given that this is just 80,000 coins, it is nowhere near as big as what is available on slots that offer a better return to players over the longer run.
Graphics and soundtrack 5/5
The combination of Hendrix guitars, the superstar himself, plus a range of ’60s-themed symbols, (set against a desert backdrop) screams Woodstock and flower power.
The presentation values capture the essence of the era perfectly. The big win guitar lick you get when a decent pay eventually comes your way is a nice touch.
Originality and creativity 4/5
It is clear NetEnt wanted to create something different here and to a large extent they have done precisely that. The number of features, the symbols, and presentation all are very different to the typical 5×3 video slot you’ll play.
Play value 1/5
Oh dear, this is where Jimi lets himself down somewhat. From teeny tiny base game wins (often less than one-fifth of your stake) to tiny free spins round wins (less than 2x your typical base game bet).
As great as this slot looks, and as regularly as you win, you’ll just see your balance heading south. A great, great shame.
Jackpot potential 2/5
An 80,000-coin jackpot is not to be sniffed at, especially when you can wager $2.00 per coin. However, it is still not as much as is available on some other slots available at legal NJ online casinos.
And when you add the play value in, it doesn’t really appeal as a jackpot game.
Repeat play 2/5
The presentation and excellent features may drag you back from time to time to give the game a few spins, but it won’t be long before you see your bank balance dropping and you’ll realize why you stopped playing the game in the first place.
Total score 14/25
The Jimi Hendrix slot is beautiful to look at and listen to, is packed with great features, but is let down by extremely poor RTP value, certainly when we tested it.
It’s hard to swallow waiting ages to hit free spins and then be rewarded by winning 1.8 times your original stake. This could have been a classic, but falls well short.
