You only have to witness the success of Game of Thrones to understand that medieval times are enjoying a massive resurgence in popularity at present. The tales of knights of the realm, fair maidens, and jousting competitions witnessed by royalty are always at the heart of such fanciful and memorable stories.
Now you can enjoy a superb new slot from IGT that is based precisely on this. It is called Medieval Money. This online game comes packed with some innovative features that drag the slot from the Dark Ages kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Let’s take a closer look at this slot and see exactly how it shapes up under closer scrutiny.
Overview: Medieval Money
Medieval Money is a 5×3 reel slot designed by IGT. It’s set against the backdrop of a castle with a huge amount of gold and other prizes in the foreground. The game features a total of 20 fixed paylines in play. You can wager from $0.01 up to $50.00 per payline, giving you a massive range of bets from $0.20 up to $1,000 per spin.
The in-game jackpot is a somewhat miserly 1,000 coins. This doesn’t make appealing reading to the bigger jackpot hunters. However, you can win on multiple paylines in spins and by using some other features, you can take home wins in excess of this amount if you trigger more than one payline as a win on a spin.
Who will the Medieval Money slot appeal to?
Being truthful, a 1,000 coin jackpot isn’t going to have the big cash prize hunters queuing up to play the Medieval Money slot. There are, however, plenty of features that will attract other slot gamers. Those that enjoy distinctive and unusual features will certainly get a lot from the game, especially the bonus rounds. Its cartoon-style design will also appeal to fans of this particular style of slot.
This slot also definitely falls under the more quirky banner compared to other slots. It doesn’t have the same visceral feel of a slot like the Game of Thrones slot. It takes a completely different slant, focusing on cartoon styling and touches of humor.
This is not a bad thing and the graphics are well designed and look great on the reels. Fans of games that don’t take themselves too seriously will certainly find plenty to amuse themselves here.
Gameplay: Medieval Money
Once you’ve selected the size of your line bet, then you’re ready to get the reels spinning. You can click the spin button in the middle or use the auto play feature. Auto play allows you to play up to 50 spins at the current bet level automatically. You can, of course, stop the auto play feature at any point by clicking back on that feature once again.
The symbols on the reels are the usual mix of lower and higher value symbols, plus a few extra to trigger some of the key features on the slot. The playing card lows are once again in evidence with the Jack, Queen, King and Ace all shown on the reels. These offer payouts between 5 and 125 coins, depending on the type and number of symbols on a payline.
There are also four of higher value symbols. They are the knight with the rather large nose, the princess (who looks singularly unimpressed with things given the expression on her face), a rather portly queen, and the king. These offer cash wins of between 15 and 300 coins per payline.
There are three other symbols to take note of on the reels. There is the Medieval Money logo. This is the highest paying symbol in the game, offering the jackpot of 1,000 coins per payline if landed five on a line. This symbol is stacked two high across all the reels, which does offer the opportunity of landing the win across multiple paylines if you are fortunate enough.
The two remaining symbols are the Wild symbol (jester’s hat). The Wild substitutes for all the symbols outlined above to help create winning paylines. (Although this symbol does only appear on the middle three reels on the slot.)
The final symbol is the Bonus symbol, which is the target. Land three or more of these on the middle reels to trigger the Archery Picker Bonus round. Here you select one of nine targets to reveal which of four bonus games to play.
These are Money Bags Picker, where you get to pick from three money bags, each with a different cash prize. Joust Free Spins bonus, where you receive 7 free spins with Jousting Wilds and thr Expansion feature in operation. This sees two jousting helmets added to reels 1 and 5. One is blue an one is red. When both symbols land on the same row, the knights joust and the winner turns all symbols between the two helmet symbols that are the same color as the victors symbol, Wild.
Additionally, you can land the Spell Picker Bonus. Here a Wizard offers up to five different spell bottles. Each contains a stake multiplier prize of between 5x and 100x your stake. The player can elect to accept the offer or reject it and receive a new offer. However, after five offers, the final offer must be accepted.
Finally, land the Dragon Path Bonus, where you get to spin a wheel and move that number of spaces along the path. You’ll earn a multiplier bonus based on your stake, but spin the reel and land a skull and the round will end. Keep spinning the reels to move along the path and you can increase your multiplier win up to 200x your stake.
Special Features: Medieval Money
The Jesters Hat Wild symbol substitutes for any of the low or higher value symbols in the game and can be used to complete paylines during the base game and also during the free spins round.
Bonus symbols (a target) are the only way you can access the bonus features. This feature is only shown on reels 2, 3 and 4 and you need to land all three symbols on each of the reels in a single spin to trigger the bonus game.
Multiple bonus games
Once you trigger the Target Bonus, you can then pick from a selection of targets to start up one of four bonus games. Each offers a different type of game to play which can trigger wins, approaching 200x your stake.
There really isn’t a huge amount to understand about Medieval Money. It is a simple slot to follow with a very easy to understand base game and a choice of simple bonus games that offer players a chance at larger wins. This is a solid and enjoyable slot for a beginner to hone their slot skills on.
Medieval Money logo wins
In the base game, big wins can be tricky to come by at times, but if you do trigger one then it is likely the Medieval Money logo will play a part and hitting this (with or without the Wild symbol) can lead to some of the better sized base game wins.
Multiple bonus games
The fact that the Target Bonus allows you to pick from several targets to trigger one of four bonus games does give the slot a good amount of added appeal as you’ll want to play the game until you have at least tried out all of the four games to see which one offers the best value wins.
Lack of multipliers in base game
Sometimes a run of lower value wins can see your bankroll diminish relatively quickly. To compensate for this, it would be nice if there were some multipliers to boost smaller wins in the base game, such as having a 2x multiplier on Wild wins for example.
That small base game Jackpot of 1,000 coins does not compare too well with some of the bigger jackpots you can find available on plenty of other slot games available at the present time.
Bigger value wins rare
It can be very difficult to trigger the bigger wins in the base game especially and you can spend a lot of time spinning the reels winning smaller amounts before a bigger win hits and even then, the win may just be a fraction of what you have already spent.
Graphics & soundtrack 3/5
The graphics on the slot are well suited to the game and have a nice cartoon style to them. The sound is equally good and fits in nicely with the genre of game although to be fair, there is nothing that breaks any new ground with either.
Originality & creativity 3/5
I like the fact that there is a selection of bonus games to play, but in truth the base game and the way the Wild and Bonus symbols are used are very generic of other slots and there isn’t a great deal more different other than the extra bonus games to try out.
Play value 3/5
This was a tricky one as this does seem to be a rather volatile slot when played over short periods. During some session, I had my money all but swallowed up and other times I’ve hit two big wins and almost doubled my money after only 10 spins. However on balance, the play value hasn’t been too bad, hence the slightly better than average mark.
Jackpot potential 1/5
In truth a 1,000 coin jackpot, even if you are playing at the higher stake levels on this game, isn’t going to set the pulses racing of the serious jackpot hunters in the slot world.
Repeat play 4/5
Despite that low jackpot and perhaps a little repetitive gameplay, the bonus games do give the Medieval Money slot a lot of added appeal and I can see plenty of slot gamers giving this game a few tries to unlock all of the bonus features.
Total score: 14/25
This is a fun and enjoyable slot when it is playing more generously, but it can be a slot at times. The additional bonus games give it added longevity and appeal, but the low jackpot does mean that it won’t have universal appeal to slot gamers.
