I must admit, the name of this slot is something that I think Father Ted would have come up with when thinking about a title for a slot based on a trio of gun-wielding women. But does The Lovely Outlaws have any more substance to it beyond its rather cutesy name?
This isn’t the first slot about a troop of rather attractive outlaws from the Wild West. Pistoleras from Microgaming is another such slot on a similar theme. Let’s take a look and see if these Lovely Outlaws have the firepower to get the better of their most obvious opponent.
Overview: The Lovely Outlaws
The game is set in the Old West, as evidenced by the fact that the three outlaws are dressed as Mexican bandits. Of course, as the name suggests, these are all very attractive ladies as well as being mean gunslingers. They are also three of the four highest paying symbols on the reel. (The Lovely Outlaws logo being the highest paying symbol in the game.)
There are three lower value playing card low symbols A, K and Q and the slot boasts 5×3 reels. There are 99 selectable paylines in play with the Tumbling Reels feature in operation. This means the symbols fall into place from above and any winning paylines disappear, allowing new symbols to drop down and potentially create additional winning paylines from the same spin.
Who will The Lovely Outlaws slot appeal to?
Western-themed slots are not uncommon for slot gamers to encounter and they certainly enjoy popularity with many. The fact that this is a game where you can easily control how much you bet will also make it popular with both lower stakes players as well as those who are used to playing for more cash.
However, it is the Tumbling Reels feature, and the fact that you get additional symbols replacing winning paylines, that will draw punters that enjoy these types of innovative features. That and a very enjoyable Free Spins round (with additional Wilds on the reels) will certainly get people getting the reels spinning in the hope of winning up to 1,000 times their stake.
Gameplay: The Lovely Outlaws
Somewhat disappointingly, H5G decided the backdrop should be a mock-up of a crate secured by ropes (which delineate each reel). This does fit in with the Wild West theme, but it’s rather uninspiring, to be honest.
You can play 1, 10, 25, 50, or 99 paylines per spin. (Although the best option is always to play the maximum number of paylines, even if it means a smaller coin size.) Speaking of which, coin size ranges from $0.01 to $0.50. This equals a minimum bet of $0.99 and a maximum bet of $49.50. This puts the slot firmly in the range of the mid to lower stakes player.
Once you’ve got the reels spinning the first issue with The Lovely Outlaws becomes apparent, and that is the pace of the slot. Unfortunately, if you want to spin the reels at any sort of pace at all, you have to keep clicking the Spin button to get through the tortuous process of the Tumbling Reels, as the slot reveals all the winning lines each time.
This is exacerbated somewhat in the Autoplay mode. When using this feature it can seem to take an eternity to get through 25 to 50 spins, unless you want to click the spin button with feverish intensity.
In truth this is a shame, as with the Tumbling Reels feature in operation, The Lovely Outlaws slot is hugely enjoyable to play. Wins come relatively frequently, although the majority are relatively small. However, these are punctuated with occasional bigger wins helping to increase the bank balance.
The Tumbling Reels feature, as a result of these regular wins, is triggered frequently. You can then trigger subsequent wins as the new symbols fall into place on the reels. This gives the player a very positive feeling, as well as feeling like you’re getting good value for money from the game, even if the wins are generally small.
There’s 5,000 coins available as the biggest prize in the base game in a single payline (five of the Lovely Outlaws logo symbols). This is a relatively small prize but that prize could be won simultaneously across several paylines, or you can hit other paylines in addition to the big one to boost the value.
The Free Spins game is triggered when you land three of the pink Day of the Dead Skull Scatter symbols across reels 1, 2 and 3. This triggers, 1, 2, 3, or 4 free spins initially, but if you trigger the bonus on more than one payline then the number of free games will be added up and you will receive a greater number of free spins. However, free spins cannot be triggered again from within the bonus round.
During free spins, there is an additional Wild symbol on the reels. The purple Wild appears on Reels 1, 2 and 3. The new Wild symbol appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. You can land both these symbols across the reels at the same time to increase your chances of a bigger win.
Special features: The Lovely Outlaws
This popular feature has many names depending on the slot you play. While how the symbols are generated isn’t hugely important, the fact that winning paylines disappear, new symbols drop down from above, and new winning lines can be created can lead to multiple wins on the same spin.
The Wild symbol in the base game appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. It’s simply identified by the word Wild. This symbol doesn’t have its own payout but instead can replace any low or high value symbol to create additional winning paylines.
Skull Scatter & Free Spins
Land three of the pink Day of the Dead Skull Scatter symbols on the first three reels and then for each payline the symbols create, you will earn 1, 2, 3 or 4 free spins per payline. This means you can trigger a varying amount of free spins (though around 8-12 appears to be the norm). During free spins an additional Wild is placed on reels 1, 2 and 3 to help offer you a chance at more wins.
Although the backdrop to the reels is somewhat uninspiring, I think The Lovely Outlaws slot works very well in other ways. The outside of the reels is very prettily done in more ways than one. The animations on the three Lovely Outlaws when they hit a win are also excellent. The Free Spins bonus also has a lovely cut-scene to introduce it.
If you like lower variance games that offer regular wins then you won’t be disappointed with The Lovely Outlaws slot. You can and do win regularly on the slot. Additionally, you can occasionally trigger more wins using the Tumbling Reels feature, which also swell the coffers nicely.
Without doubt it is the Tumbling Reels feature that makes this slot so enjoyable to play. The feature works equally well in both the base game and also during free spins, where smaller wins can add up to larger wins if you can trigger additional wins from a single spin, especially with the extra Wild on the first three reels.
If you are looking for a bit of value on the slot in terms of multipliers then unfortunately you won’t find any. Even adding multipliers for Wild wins in the base game, or perhaps for Tumbling Reels wins in addition to the opening payline would have added another level of enjoyment to the slot.
Very slow gameplay
The most frustrating aspect of the slot was the speed at which it plays. These Lovely Outlaws may be beautiful but they certainly take their time. Every payline win scrolls through each win very slowly. If you hit a win, it can be many seconds before the reels spin again, even on autoplay. You can click through this to speed the action up but it won’t be too long before you get fed up of continually clicking.
Few bigger wins
Although this is a lower variance slot, the fact that bigger wins are so rare does raise questions about the long term play value. Even if you think you are winning regularly, you may find that your balance is declining sharply if those wins are only small.
Graphics & soundtrack 3.5/5
There’s nothing to dislike about the slot in terms of how it is presented. The graphics suit the theme well and are nicely rendered and the use of music and sound effects is very good. It isn’t the most eye-catching game but it performs the crucial tasks well.
Originality & creativity 3.5/5
Tumbling Reels is always a good feature as it is still a relatively new feature on slots and add that to a game with additional wilds in Free Spins and a novel way of calculating how many free spins you get, and you have a relatively original slot even if it may look somewhat similar to many others.
Play value 2.5/5
Unfortunately, play value is where things start to go a bit ugly for The Lovely Outlaws. Winning regularly is great but the big problem is that many of these wins, even the five-of-a-kind wins, only pay a very small amount, and overall that still leaves you nursing a loss and feeling a little cheated.
Jackpot potential 2/5
The base game jackpot of 5,000 coins doesn’t sound too bad, but when you consider the maximum coin value is $0.50, that means a maximum jackpot of $2,500 per payline. That doesn’t compare too well with some competitor games available.
Repeat play 2/5
The speed of play is a real issue here alongside the play value. Clicking the Spin button repeatedly makes the slot eminently quicker and more playable, but also means that you tend to lose money just that bit faster. As such, this isn’t a game you’ll rush to play again.
Total score: 13.5/25
All in all, The Lovely Outlaws is a slot that doesn’t do anything badly, it just doesn’t have the wow factor to draw you in and keep playing. This and the issues with the speed of play mean you’ll likely wind up more frustrated than not.
