Ancient Egypt is a popular theme for slot games. It wasn’t that long ago that I wrote a review of the Cleopatra online slot game, and there are numerous other slots based on Egyptian mythology and artifacts.
However, NetEnt’s Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot offers something a little different. This slot is shaped like a pyramid with five reels arranged, in order, three, four, five, four, and three symbols high in the shape of a pyramid.
It’s an intelligently designed slot, which obviously requires different ways to calculate wins for the player than the usual paylines. Let’s take a closer look at the slot and see what it has to offer.
Overview: Pyramid Quest for Immortality
The Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot looks different than a standard New Jersey online slots setup.
The pyramid arrangement of the reels is a nice touch and the background music suits the slot perfectly. There are no paylines on the slot; you simply need to hit three or more identical symbols on three or more consecutive reels to trigger a win, but your first symbol must be located on the first reel.
The higher the number of symbols you get on a winning payline, the greater the size of the payout.
However, that isn’t all. Cascading reels are in operation, which means any winning symbols disappear and are replaced by new symbols falling down from above, triggering a chance at consecutive payline wins and an increasing multiplier with each win you hit in succession.
Bets start at $0.10 per spin and can be increased up to $50 per spin using the coin value and level meters at the bottom of the screen.
Who will the Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot appeal to?
Given the popularity of Egyptian-themed slots, fans of this particular genre will find entertainment here. However, its appeal will extend far beyond this initial group.
While not a traditional slot, there is enough similarity between the game and a typical slot to make it appeal to traditional slot fans. But those who enjoy innovative slots that move away from the traditional paylines/free spins combination will find plenty to enjoy here.
Pyramid Quest for Immortality is one of the most imaginative new slots I’ve played for a while, and NetEnt has certainly created a game with longterm appeal to all slot players.
Where to play Pyramid Quest For Immortality in New Jersey
As it so happens, the quest for immortality is a journey with many starting points, at least in terms of New Jersey online casinos.
Players can find the game at:
Gameplay: Pyramid Quest for Immortality
The first thing to note about the Pyramid Quest For Immortality slot is that the traditional reel setup isn’t here. Instead, blocks inscribed with the symbols drop down from above. The playing card symbols act as the lower paying symbols in the game, while the numerous Egyptian-themed symbols act as the higher paying symbols.
With no paylines in operation, it is easier to work out what your bet will be. Simply select your coin value (from $0.01 up to $0.50) and then select your level, and you can place a bet from $0.10 up to $50 per spin.
Essentially, that is all there is to this slot. There are no bonus games, no free spins rounds or any second screen games.
All the action occurs within the base game, a format that divides opinion. Some players prefer this, whereas others prefer to have the aim of triggering a bonus round or free spins.
That is not to say that there aren’t any helpful icons to help players achieve bigger wins. You can generate a wild symbol, which substitutes for any of the symbols in the slot by landing a winning symbol at the top of the second, third and fourth reels.
When you do this, that symbol turns wild for the next set of symbols dropping down from above.
There is also the Avalanche Multiplier in effect, which means that every time you hit three successive wins using the Avalanche feature (what NetEnt has decided to call the cascading reels feature) then your multiplier increases by one. You can keep increasing the multiplier up to the maximum 10x by continually hitting successive wins.
Although it may look rather complex and completely different than a standard slot game, the Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot actually plays quite simply and is very easy to understand.
However, be warned: Beneath this simplistic looking facade lies a fiendish streak that can be highly volatile. You can spin for a while before you hit a win, but that win could be a big one.
With a jackpot of potentially 36,000x your bet available, this is also a slot that offers a sizable jackpot for those who prefer to play slots with bigger, less frequent payouts and the promise of a massive win.
Special features: Pyramid Quest for Immortality
Wilds are not on the reels in the base game, but they can be generated by landing a winning symbol at the top of reels two, three, or four. When this happens, that symbol turns wild for when the Avalanche feature occurs and this can trigger further wins from the same spin.
Hit a winning selection of symbols across the reels and these symbols will disappear and new symbols will tumble down from above to replace them. This feature can then trigger successive wins.
If you trigger three in a row, you can increase the multiplier on your wins up to a maximum of 10x.
3-4-5-4-3 reel setup
The setup of the Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot is very much centered on the pyramid shape, with the reels set up to resemble a pyramid, giving a different number of symbols available on each reel. The game looks remarkably different as a result.
Presentation and sound
If there is one thing NetEnt tends to get right, it’s presentation. Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot is no different. With imposing god statues on either side of the pyramid-shaped reels and artifacts from ancient Egypt as the high value symbols, this slot looks and sounds the part.
This is a higher variance slot, which means that most wins tend to be relatively small, but then you can hit a bigger win that can sometimes be large.
With a jackpot of up to 36,000 coins available, there is the potential on this slot for some massive wins.
The Avalanche feature is a good way to trigger these wins, especially if you can get on a run of symbols. This not only gives you a bigger feature win, but also increases the multiplier. This is the only way you can hit the 36,000-coin top prize (hitting top prize of 3,600 coins with a 10x multiplier).
No free spins
The lack of a bonus game of any kind, or perhaps more importantly, free spins, detracts a little from the game. Where as many slots give you that goal, here, you tend to play and hope you can hit the bigger win.
Again this is a taste issue. Some players prefer this; others prefer to have the free spins carrot dangled in front of them.
Small base game wins
The majority of three-symbol wins on the slot are generally very small and most do not offer you a win that matches your initial bet. This is a bit disappointing, especially given that wins do not come that frequently.
The fact that wild symbols are only generated from the top of reels two, three, and four during the Avalanche feature doesn’t help the base game’s appeal. The base game is simply a way to harvest your cash before offering you a glimmer of hope that you can win most of it back with a big win.
Graphics and soundtrack 4/5
I can’t fault the look or the sound of the slot, and NetEnt always does a great job presenting its slots. A few little extra animations would have perhaps helped the game be a little more interesting, especially since there are no bonus features to break up the base game play.
Originality and creativity 5/5
The Avalanche feature is always a popular move, and the way wilds are generated is novel (though not necessarily better than having wilds on the reels). Add to that the unusual reel setup, and you have a novel game.
Play value 2/5
The big wins and Avalanche feature keep this mark a little higher. When you trigger these, you can win some very nice sums of money to help your balance.
However, in general, the base game can start to take rather big bites out of your bankroll if you are not careful.
Jackpot potential 4/5
With up to 36,000 coins to be won and the ability to increase your coin value to $0.50 per spin, as well as up the level to increase your bet to 10 times the coin amount, you can win some serious cash on the Pyramid Quest for Immortality slot.
This will definitely appeal to jackpot hunters.
Repeat play 5/5
A lack of bonus games and high volatility may put some slot players off, but there is plenty in this slot to keep you coming back if you enjoy these more volatile games and the unusual features on the slot.
Total score 20/25
This is a playable and truly enjoyable slot, but you do need to play at the right level for your bankroll and be ready for significant win droughts. If you do, you could enjoy some massive wins and the Avalanche feature is a big plus.
