How does NHL betting in NJ work?

NHL lets you wager on game results, individual stat lines, and team totals. You have wagers such as a moneyline (outright winner of a game), the puck line (usually something like -1.5 goals),  and goal totals. You’ll find prop bets, and a wide variety of them at that. These lines could be around the number of shots, points, goalie saves, and power-play production.

Hockey’s fast tempo makes in-game wagering a dynamic option for bettors. Things like a power play, a pulled goalie, or a hot shift can swing the odds at a moment’s notice. Some bettors will find their angle pregame (let’s say a team total) and then use live markets to add, hedge, or even grab a better number as the game unfolds.

A few things to know before you dive in:

  • Eligibility and location: You must be 21 years of age or older and physically located within New Jersey to place any sort of NHL wager. The operators confirm your location using geolocation.
  • Licensed platforms: Only New Jersey-approved sports wagering apps can offer NHL markets. There are rules on limits, menus, and promotions set by NJ regulators.
  • Account checks and safeguards: You’ll have to verify your ID before getting started. The sites also have built-in tools, such as deposit limits, cool-offs, and self-exclusions to keep you in check.

What are the most common NHL bet types?

With hockey not being as high scoring as sports such as basketball or football, certain markets tend to be bettor favorites: moneylines and puck lines for outcomes, totals, and prop wagers around individual statistics. As mentioned above, live options are a hit, too, due to how quickly a game can swing based on scenarios like power plays or a goalie getting pulled.

Moneyline — picking the winner

Simply put, when you place a moneyline wager, you’re selecting the team will win the game outright, regardless of by how much. Example: if the New Jersey Devil are -140 against the New York Rangers, a $14 wager return $10 in profit (plus your original stake) if the Devils win. Similar to MLS wagering, NHL betting will offer a three-way moneyline, providing options for Home Win, Draw, and Away Win.

Puck Line — NHL’s version of the spread

Think of the puck line as you would a spread in a football game. The standard spread for most NHL game is 1.5/+1.5 goals, with the favorite laying 1.5 and the underdog taking 1.5.

As an example of a puck line bet, let’s consider a matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey Devils.

  • The Flyers may be -1.5 (+200)
  • The Devils may be at +1.5 (-220)

A $100 wager on the favored Flyers would earn you $200 if they win by two or more goals.

On the other hand, you will have to risk $220 on the Devils to return $100. If New Jersey wins or loses by only a single goal, you would cash a win.

The operators adjust the odds according to how both teams match up with each other to reflect the margin. Empty-netters can prove to make a significant difference in this market, so be sure to pay attention to late-game action.

Totals — Wagering on the number of goals scored

When placing a total wager (commonly referred to as the “over/under”), you are betting on whether the total number of goals will go over a specific number. For example, in a game between the Devils and Rangers, the total could be 6.5 goals. If you think there will be more than six goals scored, you’d take the over. If you think six or fewer is more realistic, you’d take the under. Live betting a total can be fast-paced, and first-period goals are a popular take on this specific bet.

Props — shots, goals, and goalie saves

Player and team props allow you to wager on specific stat lines or events, rather than the outcome of a game. For example, you could bet on Jack Hughes to score over 0.5 goals in a game for the Devils. Pay attention to player usage, matchups, and how power plays can affect things. Do plenty of research ahead of time, too, because injuries can sometimes be a factor.

Popular offensive categories include:

  • Anytime goal scorer: picking a player to score at least one goal at any time in the game
  • First goal scorer: Player to score the first goal
  • Assists: An over/under bet on the number of assists made by a player in a game
  • Player shots: An over/under on the number of shots made by a player in a game.
  • Player points: An over/under on the number of points scored by a player in a game.
    • For new NHL bettors: a “point” in hockey is not the same as a goal. Players earn one point for an assist and one point for a goal.

Popular defensive categories include:

  • Goalie saves: An over/under on the number of saves made by a goalie in the game.
  • Goals against: An over/under on the total number of goals allowed in the game.
  • Blocked shots: An over/under on the total number of blocked shots by a player.

Parlays and same-game parlays

Parlays allow you to combine multiple legs for a riskier wager, but a bigger payout. Same-game parlays allow you to combine different wagers from the same game into an “SGP” bet. For example, you could place an SGP on a team to win, a specific player to score at least one goal, and the total for the game to be more than 5.5 goals.  While same-game versions are fun, the different legs can be highliy correlated with one another. Don’t go picking a low total and then select a laundry list of players to each score goals. Always check the operator rules and consider keeping your legs modest.

Live betting — adjusting to how a game plays out in real time

Live betting during an NHL game involves wagers placed after the puck drops. Most of these wagers are the same types you’ll find pregame, only these ebb and flow with the game. Odds are adjusted in real time. In turn, you can find real value if a team goes down early in the game, but you think it can pull off a comeback. Prices update in real time after things like goals or penalties, so you can hedge mid-game. You can use live betting as a way to get a sense for a game’s rhythm instead of placing a wager before the puck drops.

NHL futures betting

Reading the future for your favorite NHL team isn’t easy. But that’s what makes NHL futures so much fun. These bets offer hockey fans a good sweat throughout the whole season.

When making an NHL futures wager, you’re betting on an outcome to be determined later in the season. Since it’s the furthest away and hardest to pick, the most money in NHL futures betting goes toward who will win the Stanley Cup title.

Books will offer odds on all 32 teams to win the championship with varying odds based on each team’s talent as well as action placed on certain teams.

You will find many more NHL futures opportunities beyond the Stanley Cup. That includes odds on some of the following:

  • Division/Conference winners.
  • Over/unders for points in the standings for individual teams.
  • Regular-season point totals for individual players.
  • Team-leading scorers.
  • The postseason awards, which include the Art RossSelke and Vezina
    trophies.

Forming an NHL betting strategy

Whether you’re a beginner or consider yourself experience bettor, we have tips for you NHL wagering strategy in New Jersey.

Wagering on the NHL in NJ for beginners

If you’re just getting started with NHL betting, keep it simple and straightforward.

  • Start with moneylines and totals: They’re basic, and also generally less volatile than props or parlays. Keep it straightforward as you start. These wagers also focus on the core concepts such as pricing and how totals are calculated, without added variables. These bet types are easier to track.
  • Pay attention to starting goalies: It’s all about matchups, and goalies can swing prices more than any single player on the ice can. Just as you would look for injuries shortly before an NFL game starts, check which goalies are starting an hour before puck drop. A late switch to a backup can move a pregame line significantly.
  • Don’t let emotion get the best of you: Leave your bias at the door. Emotionally betting on the Devils or Rangers (or any team, for that matter), can sway your view. Don’t go chasing your losses, either.

NHL wagering for experienced bettors

As you get your feet wet in the NHL wagering space, you’ll start to pay closer attention to smaller details. Here are a few suggestions to consider.

  • Special teams matter: Take a look at power play percentages vs. penalty kill percentages. Mismatches drive totals and points more than you think. Focus on 10-game splits and first-unit time on the ice to see trends that season averages can often overshadow.
  • Focus on shot-attempt statistics: Use Team Corsi/Fenwick tools (share and quality) to help spot under- or overperformers beyond final scores. Pair these with expected goals (xG) or high-danger chance rates to identify regression candidates.
  • Keep scheduling in mind: Traveling does make a difference. So do things like back-to-back games and three-in-four-nights. Time zones can also play a factor if a team is traveling across the country. Pay attention to starting goalies, because a second leg often signals a backup will be playing and thus a tigher bench.
  • Shop around: Do your dilligence as a customer and shop around for the best odds. We recommend downloading more than one NHL betting site so you can get the feel for each, but more importantly, operators all have different odds for games. The small payout differences add up over time.

Wagering on NHL teams in or near New Jersey

New Jersey hockey fans have a few local teams to watch. NJ boasts one NHL team — an iconic NHL franchise in its own right — but there are teams in neighboring states that draw lots of local fan support, too.

Bet on the New Jersey Devils

A clear home-state favorite, the New Jersey Devils, based in Newark, play their home games in the Prudential Center. The Devils were founded in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts. The franchise then played as the Colorado Rockies from 1976-82. The team traditionally plays in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.

Here are a few franchise highlights:

  • Nine division titles
  • Five conference championships
  • Three Stanley Cup titles (1994-95, 1999-00, 2002-03)

Bet on the New York Rangers

The New York Rangers are one of the NHL’s “Original Six” franchises that played for 25 years, from 1942-67, before the significant expansion of the NHL began. The team was founded in 1926. The Rangers play home games in Manhattan at the historic Madison Square Garden as a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.

Numerous hall-of-famers have played, coached or managed for the franchise.

Some franchise highlights include:

  • Eight division titles
  • Two conference championships
  • Four Stanley Cup titles (1927-28, 1932-33, 1939-40, 1993-94)

Bet on the Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers entered the league in 1967 and, with its Philly home, draws plenty of fans in southern NJ.

The team plays home games at the Xfinity Mobile Arena as a Metropolitan Division, Eastern Conference member. The Flyers aren’t short on franchise success, either.

Here are a few Flyers highlights:

  • 16 division titles
  • Eight conference championships
  • Two Stanley Cup titles (1973-74, 1974-75)

NHL betting FAQ

A puck line bet is usually set at 1.5. It is a version of point spread betting that is applied to hockey. You are deciding whether a favorite can win by two goals or more. They can also pick an underdog and whether it will lose by less than two.

Goalies are extremely important in hockey. They can get hot and lift a team to unexpected wins. Also, with totals usually set at between 5 and 6.5, a stellar goalie can often help under bettors.

When picking an NHL game, all games use the moneyline. Simply, you are picking one team to win. Payouts are adjusted based on whether the team is a favorite or an underdog.

Eight teams in each of the Western and Eastern conferences qualify for the playoffs; 16 in all. That includes the top three teams in each of the two divisions. Two wild-card teams in each conference also qualify.

The winners play in bracket-style competition with first-round matchups determined by finish in the standings. Teams play the other advancing teams in their conference bracket.

Each series in the NHL playoffs is a best-of-seven series. The two conference champions meet in the Stanley Cup final to determine the NHL champion.

The over/under works much the same way as a totals bet in other sports. A goal total might be set at 5.5. You are simply picking whether the total goals scored will go over or under that number.

Certainly, this isn’t an exact science, but factors such as offensive and defensive ability are the first things to consider. A particularly hot scorer against a weak defense is a good example.

Hot goaltenders should also be a consideration when wagering. A goalie playing well might keep the score low. Goalies struggling might trend in the opposite direction.

Specific teams also match up better with other teams because of the roster.

If a total was set at six and the game ends 4-2, that would be a “push.” In this instance, bettors receive their money back.

Overtime goals do count toward the score in the NHL. A shootout win adds a single goal to the score, and that is also counted.

Shootout wins add a single goal to the final score, which affects betting and totals wagers.

Yes, that can be accomplished via live, or in-game, wagering. This type of betting is available on most sports betting apps and online platforms.

The odds are set by bookmakers looking at matchups. Furthermore, their goal is to even out the action on both teams. The lines can shift depending on the money put on each team.

The puck line is usually set at 1.5 and may go higher if there is a particularly strong team against a weak team.

In the NHL draft, teams select players for the potential to be on their roster eventually. Most players are allocated to minor leagues for seasoning before working their way to the NHL.

A lottery determines the draft order. Each of the 16 teams that missed the Stanley Cup playoffs have a shot at the first draft pick.

Three drawings occur:

  • The first drawing determines the No. 1 selection.
  • The odds for remaining teams are adjusted proportionally for the second drawing to determine the No. 2 pick.
  • Odds are then adjusted for the third drawing to determine the No. 3 pick.

The teams left receive picks 4 through 16 based on inverse order of the standings. Any of the 16 teams can win the lottery, but no team can move back more than three spots.

The 2026 NHL draft is set for June 26-27 at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.
