BetMGM will bring responsible gambling messages to MetLife Stadium and its New Jersey online customers throughout September.
MGM Resorts International and BetMGM are also contributing a combined $320,000 to gambling research, support organizations, and problem gambling councils. NJ users of BetMGM Casino and BetMGM Sportsbook will see related messages across the operator’s digital platforms during Responsible Gaming Education Month.
The initiative is part of the companies’ renewed partnership with the American Gaming Association for Responsible Gaming Education Month (RGEM).
GameSense messages will appear at MetLife Stadium
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is among 17 professional sports venues participating in the campaign.
GameSense messages will appear on LED ribbon boards and scoreboards during pregame activities. The broader campaign includes selected NFL stadiums and Major League Baseball ballparks around the country.
The British Columbia Lottery Corporation developed GameSense and licensed the program to MGM Resorts in 2017. It focuses on helping customers understand how gambling works, recognize the risks involved, and keep their activity within planned spending and time limits.
BetMGM will also display responsible gambling reminders across its online platforms. Sportsbook messages will encourage users to consider a time-out and include QR codes linking to additional information and support resources.
The operator plans to send targeted responsible gambling emails during September. GameSense and RGEM messaging will also appear at retail sportsbooks.
“Player protection is a priority every day at BetMGM, and RGEM gives us an opportunity to highlight those efforts,” BetMGM Chief Compliance Officer Rhea Loney said.
Funding goes toward research and player support
Some of the $320,000 commitment will fund research through the International Center for Responsible Gaming.
MGM Resorts and BetMGM are also expanding their sponsorship of state problem gambling councils, including support for the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline. However, the announcement did not identify the individual councils receiving money or provide a breakdown of the contribution.
The Evive Foundation will receive another portion of the funding. The organization connects people affected by gambling with evidence-based digital tools and peer support.
The companies have certified more than 3,000 employees as GameSense Advisors, with the training now spanning more than 45 departments. Those employees are prepared to discuss responsible gambling with customers and direct them to appropriate resources.
How New Jersey players can control their gambling
BetMGM customers can set deposit, loss, and session limits through the Responsible Gaming section of their account settings. Players can also activate a time-out when they want to block themselves from gambling for a temporary period.
BetMGM’s consolidated account system means those limits follow a customer across every state where the operator is available. A BetMGM time-out or self-exclusion activated in one state also restricts access to BetMGM in other states.
These account-level controls differ from New Jersey’s statewide self-exclusion program. The state program applies across licensed operators rather than to BetMGM alone.
The NJ self-exclusion program allows people to exclude themselves from internet gaming and online sports wagering only, or from those activities as well as Atlantic City casinos and racetrack sportsbooks.
Available terms are one year, five years, or life. Enrollment can be completed through the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement’s website, by video conference, or in person. Internet-only exclusion can also be initiated directly through an account with a licensed operator.
Once an exclusion takes effect, covered operators must block the person from gambling and remove them from marketing and promotional lists. Anyone who gambles while excluded cannot collect winnings or recover their wagers.
