Wow. WOW. WOOOOOOW.
Holy s—, did you SEE that?!
What. The. —k.
That is just a small sample of phrases overheard during the July 21 grand opening of “The Hook” in Atlantic City. From the hair-twirling aerialist to the razor blade-swallowing illusionist to the foul-mouthed and uproarious co-hosts, “The Hook” was non-stop entertainment from start to finish.
Truly, “The Hook” does not fit into any one genre. It is a brilliant blend of circus, cabaret, comedy and interactive performance. Each of the cast members is uniquely suited to their specific roles, combining otherworldly talent with raw appeal.
‘The Hook’ is more than just the show itself
But the spectacle inside the iconic and completely renovated Warner Theatre at Caesars Atlantic City is only part of the show.
Superfrico, an Italian American psychedelic (their words, not ours) dining experience, is just as mind-bending and sensory-overloading as the stage production. Throughout the meal, performers from “The Hook” drop in as jugglers, dancers, schmoozers or Domino’s Pizza delivery men.
Unique menu items range from classic meatballs with a bit of a citrusy twist to a sweet and spicy chocolate budino to deep-dish pizza topped with jumbo lump crab. Wash it all down with a bourbon, chartreuse and cold brew cocktail chilled by a single, large ice cube featuring the restaurant’s double-penguin logo shaved into it.
Together, “The Hook” and Superfrico are part of Atlantic City’s first-ever year-round entertainment residency at a casino. Brought to the Jersey shore by Spiegelworld, the same company behind Las Vegas smash-hits “Absinthe”, “OPM” and the “Atomic Saloon Show,” the new Boardwalk tenants are pulling out all the stops to redefine entertainment in Atlantic City.
‘The Hook’ could revive live entertainment at Atlantic City casinos
Seriously, folks. This is not a review of the show or the restaurant. This is a declarative statement that live entertainment in AC is, once again, taking center stage.
Simply put — this is what has been missing from Atlantic City for years.
Beach concerts and headlining musical acts are awesome. Air shows, sports and food festivals are, too. Amusement parks and arcades are great as well.
None of them can do for Atlantic City what “The Hook” and Superfrico have the potential to do.
They have that “it” factor that creates a buzz and a sense of anticipation. Neither is a one-and-done type thing or a recurring event on the calendar. They’re not something to do to kill some time during a dreary day.
“The Hook” and Superfrico are an experience. One that is uniquely and unequivocally Atlantic City.
