Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. says the former Trump Plaza casino site on the Boardwalk has been sold, but he has not identified the buyer or disclosed the transaction’s terms.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, Small said the sale was recently completed. His account leaves key details unresolved, including who purchased the property and what they intend to do with it.
Small leaves buyer announcement to purchaser
Speaking on the nationally syndicated radio show “The Breakfast Club,” Small described the purchaser as “one of the most powerful people in the state of New Jersey.” He declined to name that person, saying he would let the buyer make the announcement.
In a later interview, Small said: “I wasn’t at the table when they did it, but they tell me it’s a done deal.”
Small expressed excitement about the property’s possibilities and highlighted its location at the end of the Atlantic City Expressway. However, no purchase price, redevelopment proposal or project timeline was disclosed in the report. The mayor’s comments do not establish whether the site will return to casino use.
Former casino closed in 2014, partly demolished in 2021
Trump Plaza opened in 1984 and closed in 2014 after three decades of operation. It was one of four Atlantic City casinos to close that year. The building was partly demolished in a controlled implosion in 2021.
The Press report identifies billionaire Carl Icahn’s subsidiary, IEP AC Plaza LLC, as the property’s owner. The company purchased the former casino and garage in December 2018 for $3 million.
That figure relates to the 2018 purchase, not the sale Small now says has been completed. The buyer’s identity and plans remain the central unanswered questions for the former Boardwalk casino site.
