The race for the White House in 2020 kicks into high gear next week, as the first presidential debate will take place Tuesday evening. A new FanDuel election pool adds an element of fun to the event.
The free-to-play pool offers real prizes for political experts in New Jersey. The game is varied enough, however, that even novices have a chance to record a win.
Details of the FanDuel Election pool for NJ
Betting on the results of elections remains illegal in not only NJ but every other state so far. This doesn’t qualify as “election wagering,” however, because you don’t have to stake money to play.
FanDuel kicks off its elections game with a free pick ´em contest, live now on the FanDuel app and website, for Tuesday’s debate. The event is slated for 9 p.m. EST, and you can watch it on all the major news networks or stream it live on YouTube.
The debate will take place at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Chris Wallace of FOX News will moderate.
In the pick ´em game is a group of 10 yes/no and multiple-choice questions. You must make your predictions prior to the debate beginning. For each correct prediction, FanDuel awards your entry points. Examples of the questions are:
- What issue will the first debate topic address?
- Which candidate will be asked to respond first in the debate?
- What color will Trump’s tie be?
- Will Trump refer to Biden as “Sleepy Joe”?
- Will Biden and/or the moderator mention Trump’s Twitter activity?
- How will the candidates greet each other?
- Will Biden mention Scranton?
- Which candidate will be the first to be cut off by the moderator because he is over time?
- Will Biden play a song on his phone during the debate?
- Will Trump mention fake news?
After the debate, FanDuel will tabulate the points and the winners will share a $10,000 prize. FanDuel intends to repeat this process for all four scheduled debates.
FanDuel will also keep a running tally of points across all four debates. The total cumulative point leaders after all four debates take place will share in another $10,000 prize.
Why giving away money is still a win for FanDuel
In a little less than a month — Oct. 21, to be exact — FanDuel will start a free election pool. The prizes will be predicated on the results of the presidential election on Nov. 3.
People might wonder why this makes sense for FanDuel, since it’s not taking in any money from wagers. Think of it as one big commercial for the brand.
In offering this contest, FanDuel may appeal to people who aren’t interested in its other products. You have to register to play, and that gives FanDuel a way to attract new users for its NJ sportsbook (and sportsbooks around the country) as well as daily fantasy sports.
Just like most businesses, FanDuel seeks to diversify its offerings in order to increase its customer base. This free-to-play pool is one way to take advantage of the election season toward that end.
