Atlantic City casinos in March saw a significant bump in revenue from February, though not nearly as large as the one enjoyed by the state’s online casinos.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported on Wednesday that Atlantic City casinos produced $230.9 million in March revenue. That is a 3.7% year-over-year decrease, but a 13.5% month-over-month decrease.
For the second straight month, online casinos out-paced the land-based market. Platforms produced an all-time record of $243.9 million.
Online casinos take the cake in Q1
As the first quarter comes to a close, the online vertical produced more revenue than retail. Online casinos generated $673 million to Atlantic City’s $644 million.
The land-based vertical being down during Q1 is to be expected. However, the growth of the online gambling has raised concern as of late.
Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism (LIGHT) at the Stockton University School of Business, isn’t convinced the trend the trend will continue in the spring and summer months. She said in a statement:
“Given the first quarter of the year is traditionally slow for land-based operations, especially in the face of unfavorable weather conditions, it is impossible to say if this is a trend that will continue into the spring and summer season when the resort traditionally sees more visitors.”
Traditionally, Atlantic City casinos have gotten near $300 million during the summer months. In 2024, properties delivered the following totals:
- June: $244.1 million
- July: $272.3 million
- August: $294.0 million
With the ascension of online casinos, it does appear that the vertical is going to compete with Atlantic City until July.
April and Mary 2024 produced $216.8 million and $239.1 million, respectively. Expect the land-based industry to continue making gradual increases until August.
Atlantic City casinos to host job fair
The Atlantic City market has high expectations for the summer, as the vertical is opening 1,700 jobs during the busiest time of year. The industry is hosting its eighth annual job fair on Thursday, April 24.
Future employees are able to meet representatives from each casino in one location. The job fair takes place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 24.
