How do prepaid card casinos work?

Just about all online casinos allow you to use debit cards and credit cards for depositing funds, and you can usually use debit cards to withdraw as well. Most of them also have their own site-branded prepaid cards, also sometimes called a prepaid account card, that you can use when banking on the sites.

To use a prepaid card, you first enroll by selecting the prepaid card as a deposit method in the site’s cashier page. For example, at Caesars Palace Online Casino you choose the option to get a Caesars Sportsbook Prepaid Play+ Card. You link the card to an account (e.g., your bank account or a PayPal account), then transfer funds onto the card which will then carry a balance. From there, you can use the card to deposit money into your online casino account.

As Caesars, for example, once you put at least $150 onto your Caesars Sportsbook Prepaid Play+ Card, the site will mail you a personalized physical card. You can then continue to deposit funds using the card thereafter, but of course remember you can’t do so until you fund the card first via your bank account or PayPal account.

When it comes to depositing, a prepaid card is a lot like a gift card that carries a balance until you’ve eventually spent it all. Only in the case of online casino prepaid cards, you can keep adding funds to the card. You can also withdraw money from the online casino directly to your prepaid card. From there you can move the money back into your bank account or PayPal account, or just keep the funds on your card for later use. As mentioned, you can also use the card like a debit card anywhere Discover cards are accepted, including withdrawing from an ATM that accepts Discover.

The best way to think of prepaid cards is a special account you can use specifically for depositing into and withdrawing from your online casino account. Once you start using prepaid cards, you’ll find they provide an especially fast and simple way to move money back and forth.

New Jersey prepaid card casinos

Most (but not all) online casinos in NJ use prepaid cards. In just about every case, the card is a Play+ card, which means your money is actually kept in a FDIC-insured Play+ account. The cards also generally carry the branding of the participating online casino, e.g., at BetMGM you use a BetMGM Prepaid Play+ Card, etc.

Here are the current sites that let players use prepaid cards when banking:

Signing up for a prepaid card and adding funds

The process to sign up for a prepaid card varies slightly depending on the online casino, but it usually involves the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the “Cashier” and choose “[site] Prepaid Card.”
  2. Select “Enroll” or “Add New.” You’ll likely need to provide some personal information including your date of birth and Social Security Number, and you’ll have to agree to the terms and conditions.
  3. Once verified, you can load money into your prepaid card account in a variety of ways. Typically you can use a debit card to move money directly from your bank account. You can also often use a credit card or a PayPal account.
  4. You can then transfer funds instantaneously from your prepaid card account to your online casino account. This is accomplished by navigating to the Prepaid Card option in the Cashier and selecting “Deposit.”

At some point after enrolling in the program and after satisfying any necessary terms (e.g., depositing a minimum amount into your prepaid card account), you will be mailed a physical card with your name on it. You don’t need to have this card in your possession when making that first deposit, but it will be handy to have it later in case you need the account number. Remember also that you can use your prepaid card like a debit card wherever Discover is accepted.

Withdrawing from New Jersey prepaid card casinos

With some banking methods, you might not be able to withdraw using a particular option unless you depositing beforehand using the same option. For instance, it is often the case when using PayPal that you have to use it to deposit first before you can use it as a payout option.

That’s usually not the case with prepaid cards. No matter how you’ve funded your account, you can usually withdraw funds onto your prepaid card if you like. The steps you follow are similar to the ones described above for depositing. Find the Cashier, choose the prepaid card withdrawal option, and follow the instructions from there.

The good news is withdrawing funds using a prepaid card is often one of the fastest ways to get your money from an online casino account. There’s still another step to take to get the money from your prepaid card account into a bank account, if you wish, but that is usually quick as well.

Are there any fees associated with prepaid card transactions?

The online casino itself will never charge any fee to players who deposit using the prepaid card option. That includes not charging any fees per transaction or any sort of monthly fees for maintaining the card.

If you use your prepaid card at an ATM machine, the associated back might charge a transaction fee. Also, if a credit card is used to load a prepaid account, the credit card company might view this as a cash advance, and may charge according to their fee schedule. It’s therefore recommended that whenever possible, players use a debit card to fund their prepaid card account. You can also usually use PayPal to fund your prepaid card.

You also might have to pay something if you lose your prepaid card and order a replacement.

What is the physical prepaid card good for?

Physical prepaid cards are used for a variety of purposes:

  • Load money on and off NJ online casino sites
  • Point of sale purchases whenever Discover is accepted
  • ATM withdrawals within the US

Physical card holders gain access to a web portal called My Card Place where they can initiate transfers. They also gain access to account histories, an extensive FAQ, and a variety of other features. Mobile accessibility is also available. To give you an idea what it looks like, here is the portal for DraftKings Prepaid Play+ Card holders.

What are the acceptance rates on prepaid card transactions?

We can say from experience that prepaid card transactions boast among the highest success rates of any online casino depositing method. For players that have had difficulty conducting transactions with debit or credit cards or when using eChecks (ACH), prepaid cards can be a terrific alternative.

The main drawback is that the depositing process typically entails an extra step, in that players will first have to load funds on to the card and then transfer them to the site. But the difference is a matter of seconds.

There are usually depositing limits (minimums and maximums) when using prepaid cards, and they can vary depending on the site. It is worth noting is that VIP members sometimes receive higher limits which again vary depending on the online casino.
