What are eChecks?

An eCheck or e-check is simply an electronic version of a paper check. Another frequently used term that means the same thing is ACH, which is short for Automated Clearing House. You’ll sometimes see online casinos and other sites list “ACH” or “eCheck” as a banking method. You’ll also often see this method listed as VIP Preferred which is the most commonly used ACH or eCheck program among the sites.

If you access your bank account online, you are probably already familiar with making payments via electronic checks. You can use eChecks for virtually any transaction, including funding an online gambling account. The transfer of funds is subject to the high level of protection as paper checks, but with additional advantages that make it a win-win for the sender and recipient alike.

Using e-checks makes paying on time a lot more convenient while getting the payment where it needs to go more efficiently and benefits both parties. Instead of having to travel somewhere during business hours, you can complete the transaction from the comfort of your home. The payment also reaches the recipient compared faster to sending a paper check in the mail.

Other reasons to use eChecks

When you pay by e-check, as soon as the bank releases the money, it reaches your online casino account immediately. That said, some banks act faster than others in this regard. In other words, the money gets transferred quickly, but not instantaneously. However, they have certain advantages over other payment methods.

For example, paying by e-check gets around the frequent problem of trying to use a debit or credit card to make deposits for gambling purposes, only to have the transaction declined.

In most cases, the only way an e-check may be declined (at the bank’s discretion) is if there weren’t enough funds in the checking account to cover the amount being sent. Also, there is no need to travel to another location, such as when using PayNearMe which requires a trip to a 7-Eleven, CVS, or other retailer. Moreover, you can save the extra fees that would incur with e-wallets. Lastly, you can use eChecks to make both deposits and withdrawals, whereas some payment methods are only suitable for deposits.

Given all of these compelling advantages, it is no surprise to see just about all NJ online casinos accept eChecks.

Which NJ online casinos accept eChecks?

Most online casinos in New Jersey will let you use eChecks to deposit funds into your account and to withdraw your winnings later. You’ll find as well that these sites generally use VIP Preferred for electronic checks. Here are some of the eCheck online casinos:

What is the difference between eChecks and online banking at casinos?

You’ll find sites also offer online banking as an option for both depositing and withdrawing. It might seem like “eChecks” and “online banking” refer to the same thing, and sometimes you might even see the terms used interchangeably. But they are actually two different methods of moving money.

With eChecks the banks produce an electronic check that has a number just like a regular check does. You’ll need to provide your account number and your bank’s routing number when using eChecks. Those numbers will be part of the eCheck much as they appear at the bottom of a paper check. Banks vary as far as how quickly they process eChecks, but for the most part deposits are typically made more or less instantaneously. Note that when withdrawing money from an online casino via eChecks, there may be a delay as the site usually has to review the transaction first (more on depositing and withdrawing with eChecks below).

Meanwhile, online banking is essentially a way to instruct your bank online to deliver a paper check for a payment via BillPay or an equivalent system. That means you can expect online banking to take a little longer than eChecks because the bank has to physically print out a check and send it where you want it to go. In fact, it might take a couple of business days for the check to be delivered and deposited into your account.

Several casinos offer online banking as an option, including some that don’t have eChecks such as:

Other eCheck gambling sites

You can use eChecks at other gambling sites in addition to online casinos. There is very little difference in the way you would use this payment method at these sites than you would at a casino site.

eChecks at online sportsbooks

You’ll find a lot of NJ online sportsbooks also let you use eChecks to make deposits or to withdraw funds. Since eChecks are usually a relatively speedy way to deposit, they can be great when you want to fund your online sports betting account in time to wager on an upcoming game.

You can currently use eChecks to move funds to and from the following sportsbooks:

eChecks at online poker sites

Electronic checks can be used to fund NJ online poker sites as well, and to withdraw your winnings, too. Sites that use eChecks include:

How to use eChecks to make casino deposits

In order to use eChecks to deposit funds into your online casino account or other accounts, you’ll of course need to have a valid bank account with the available funds. The process at most sites is similar:

  • Find the “Cashier” page and select eChecks as your deposit method. It might be called “VIP Preferred” or “Instant eCheck” or something similar. Remember, “online banking” is not the same method.
  • Provide the needed information as directed, including your bank account number and your institution’s routing number. Double-check those numbers as you enter them, as it is fairly common for mistakes to be made when entering those long numbers.
  • Enter the amount you wish to withdraw from your bank account and deposit into the online account, then hit submit.
  • At some sites, you’ll be able to start using those funds immediately to play games and/or place wagers. In other cases, there might be a short delay for processing, but typically this doesn’t take too long. If the deposit is particularly large, there might be an extra step of verification taken that could delay the process.

As noted, sometimes transactions made with eChecks won’t go through if there is some error made along the way such as an incorrect account number. Be sure, of course, that you have the available funds in your bank account to transfer, as that will also cause the deposit to fail.

How to use eChecks to make withdrawals

You can also withdraw funds via eChecks. In fact, unlike some banking methods such as PayPal with which you usually have to use the same method to deposit first before you can use it to withdraw, you can usually withdraw funds via eChecks without having used that method before to deposit.

Be aware when withdrawing funds that you can only take out money that is in your cashable wallet and within allowable limits. For example, if you received an NJ online casino bonus that has yet to be fully cleared, the bonus money and any additional winnings will be restricted until you complete the wagering requirements.

The process with withdrawing funds via eCheck is much the same the one used for depositing:

  • Find the “Cashier” page and select eChecks as your withdrawal method.
  • Provide your bank account number and institution’s routing number.
  • Enter the amount you wish to withdraw from your online account and deposit into your bank account, then hit submit.

How quickly will you get your money?

Whereas eCheck deposits are usually processed right away, there will typically be some delay before you receive your funds when withdrawing using eChecks. The processing time is actually no different, but the delay comes because the gambling site usually has to review the transaction first before it can be completed.

Times vary, but the fastest paying casinos in NJ usually will get you your money within 24-48 hours when withdrawing via eChecks. If the withdrawal is especially large, the review time could take longer and even potentially involve the site asking for extra verification from you, but such steps are only in place to increase your safety and the security of your funds.

Pros and cons of using eChecks

Advantages of using eChecks at online casinos

  • Security — Using e-checks to transfer money in and out of an account is completely safe and a lot faster than sending or receiving a paper check. Furthermore, electronic checks give you a greater degree of protection than paper checks due to their extra built-in security features. These include digital signature authentication, public key inscription (to prevent tampering of funds), and duplicate check detection (to prevent fraud).
  • Availability — Most casinos and sportsbooks accept eChecks, and all of the poker sites do.
  • High acceptance rate —Users report satisfaction with eChecks for many reasons, one of which is the fact that the transactions are approved at a very high rate. As noted above, usually there is some user error (e.g., a mistyped account number) that causes an eCheck transaction not to go through.
  • Can use for both deposits and withdrawals — Not all banking methods at online casinos can be used both ways, but eChecks can.
  • Low minimums and high maximums — When you use eChecks sites generally let you make their lowest and highest available limits for transactions. For instance, at DraftKings Casino if you use eChecks you can withdraw as little as $1 and as much as $100,000 using eChecks.
  • No extra fees or charges — The sites will not assess any extra fees or charges when you use eChecks. Your bank probably won’t, either, although you might need to check to make sure as there could be exceptions.
  • Bonus eligibility — Whereas using some banking methods will exclude you from being able to take advantage of bonus offers (e.g., PayNearMe), with eChecks you generally will still be eligible to claim those offers.

Disadvantages of using eChecks at online casinos

  • Requires having a bank account to use — This isn’t a disadvantage for some, but there are users who either don’t have bank accounts they can use for eChecks or don’t wish to use their existing account for depositing and withdrawing from online casinos.
  • Processing time when withdrawing — Payouts via eChecks generally take at least a day or two to complete, and other banking methods might be faster, depending on the site.

Other online casino banking options

Choosing eChecks for online play

Among the many options for depositing and withdrawing at online sites, the eCheck (ACH) option is a good one for many reasons. It is simple to use, especially after doing so the first time. It is also one of the faster ways to deposit and a relatively quick way to receive payouts. Be sure to check out eChecks when playing at online casinos and other sites in New Jersey.
