New Jersey residents searching for information about roulette appear more interested in learning the rules than finding betting strategies, according to a new Hard Rock Bet report.
Rules accounted for 43% of the state’s roulette-related Google search activity examined by the operator. Bets and payouts represented another 31%, while strategy searches made up just 15%.
The report also analyzed more than 30.5 million wagers from Hard Rock Bet players in New Jersey and Michigan, providing a broader look at how customers play online roulette once they begin playing.
NJ searches focus on understanding roulette basics
Hard Rock Bet examined more than 300 roulette-related Google queries across New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. The operator grouped searches into categories covering rules, bets and payouts, strategies, and game variants.
New Jersey’s results placed rules well ahead of strategy, potentially indicating that searches are being driven more by players learning how roulette works than those looking for specific betting systems.
However, search data cannot determine whether the queries came from active casino players or people considering playing. It also does not show how many individual NJ residents conducted the searches.
Hard Rock Bet said US searches for “live roulette” increased 60% over the previous three months, although the roulette betting habits report did not provide the underlying search totals.
Players favor bets with larger potential payouts
The report’s wagering data showed a strong preference for straight-up bets, which involve placing a chip on one number.
Hard Rock Bet recorded 24.76 million straight-up wagers, representing 81.5% of all categorized bets. Split bets covering two adjacent numbers ranked second with 2.91 million wagers, or 9.57%, followed by 1.12 million corner bets covering four numbers.
The figures count individual bets rather than spins, as players can place several wagers during a single round. The 30.5 million wagers therefore do not represent 30.5 million separate spins.
The most frequently used bet types did not carry the highest average stakes. Straight-up wagers averaged approximately $5 to $7, while even-money bets on outcomes such as red or black averaged $21.10.
That difference reflects the contrasting payout structures. A standard straight-up winner pays 35-to-1 but covers only one number, while an even-money wager covers close to half the wheel and pays 1-to-1.
Lucky numbers appear among the most popular choices
Zero was selected more frequently than any other individual number, attracting 797,088 straight-up wagers and accounting for 3.22% of the category. Number 11 ranked second with a 3.07% share.
Numbers 7, 17 and 23 also placed among the five most frequently selected choices, while 00 ranked last with 421,409 wagers. Number 13 appeared among the 15 least popular selections.
Hard Rock Bet suggested those patterns could reflect traditional associations with lucky and unlucky numbers. The figures show that certain numbers were selected more often, but they do not establish whether superstition, betting-system layouts or other player preferences caused the differences.
Wagering results combine NJ and Michigan players
The wagering portion of the report covers activity from more than 32,000 Hard Rock Bet players between April and June. It includes Evolution Live Dealer and random-number-generated American roulette games offered in New Jersey and Michigan.
Hard Rock Bet also offers Atlantic City Live Roulette, which streams spins from a physical wheel at Hard Rock Atlantic City to online customers across New Jersey.
Unlike the report’s state-specific search findings, Hard Rock Bet did not separate the New Jersey and Michigan wagering results. The figures therefore offer insight into customers from one operator across both markets rather than a definitive picture of how New Jersey roulette players bet.
