Mohegan Sun was the latest launch in the New Jersey regulated online casino market.
It spreads a collection of slot, video poker and table game titles. The platform is nearly identical to the one spread by Resorts to New Jersey players. The two sites operate on the same license.

New players receive a 100% up to $1,000 first deposit bonus. It clears by wagering five times the bonus on slots and 25 times the bonus on video poker and table games. This is the fastest clearing casino bonus in New Jersey. There is a 25% up to $100 reload bonus that offers the same terms.
Mohegan Sun Online Gambling platform
Mohegan Sun platform is powered by NYX Gaming. It is a well-respected gambling company that offers products in regulated gaming markets throughout the world.
Mohegan Sun Casino software
There are three different platforms available to New Jersey players.
There is a web-based program that does not require a download. Games are integrated with the screen display.
There is also an Android, iPad and iPhone app.
Quick review of Mohegan Sun Mobile Casino
The Mohegan Sun Android and iPad apps offer limited games.
Players can deposit and withdraw directly in the app.
Mohegan Sun partnered with Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. Both offer an online casino. The two are nearly identical.
The main differences are the color scheme and logos. The promotions are somewhat different between the two sites.
The pair will combine to offer PokerStars as its online poker site in the near future. PokerStars received approval from New Jersey regulators on September 30, 2015. It is expected to launch in 2016.
What games are available at Mohegan Sun.com?
The game selection at Mohegan Sun is below other New Jersey fully legal casino sites.
The only table games are blackjack and roulette. The video poker variety is average.
There is a large slot selection.
Mohegan Sun video poker
There are four video poker games that use IGT’s Game King platform. There are six that use Spin Games.
Four of the titles overlap with the same rules and pay tables. They only have different names and graphics.
Both platforms offer:
- Jacks or Better
- Bonus Poker
- Double Bonus Poker
- Double Double Bonus Poker
The Spin Games platform replaces the word “Bonus” with “Regal.”
The Bonus Poker game uses the same pay table on both platforms. The other three games offer better returns on the Game King software.
For example, Double Bonus is 9/7/5, meaning 9 on a full house, 7 on a flush, and 5 on a straight. The Spin Games version only pays 6 on a flush. Jacks or Better is 9/6 on Game King and 9/5 on Spin Games.
Double Double is 9/6/4 on Game King and 9/5/4 on Spin Games. In the three games with different payouts, the house edge on the Spin Games version is about two to three times higher than the games on Game King.
The two other games on the Spin Games platform are Jester Poker and Deuces Wild. Jester Poker is Joker Poker that requires two pair to win, as opposed to the more traditional kings or better.
Jester Poker has a 1.5 percent edge, consistent with the other Spin Games offerings. Deuces Wild has a house edge of 2.4 percent, making it the worst video poker game we have ever discovered on a New Jersey online casino platform.
Mohegan Sun added Triple Play Poker in 2016. This is a game where the player is dealt a single hand. He then chooses the cards to keep and all three hands hold those cards, creating three chances to draw. There is a downside to this game. The pay tables are lower on Triple Play when compared to the single play options.
Mohegan Sun blackjack
There are four blackjack games at Mohegan Sun. The rules on three of them are identical and run on the NYX platform.
Players can double down on any two cards and after splitting. Surrender is permitted.
Blackjack pays 3-2 and the dealer stands on all 17’s. The games use eight decks and reshuffle after every hand.
The only difference between the games is the limit accepted. The micro limit game has a minimum bet of $.25. The high limit table has a $1,000 max bet.
There is an IGT version with the same rules except that it only uses six decks that are reshuffled after every hand. The bet limits there are $1-$1,000.
Mohegan Sun roulette
There are three roulette games.
There is a traditional single zero roulette game with a minimum bet of $1 with $1 minimum chips. There is 3 Wheel Roulette where players make a wager on three wheels at the same time.
There is also another exotic roulette game known as Double Bonus Spin Roulette.
Mohegan Sun Online Casino slots
The slot selection is massive comparable to other sites in New Jersey. There are 128 slot titles at Mohegan Sun.
Many are IGT slots that include:
- Coyote Moon
- Double Diamond
- Triple Diamond
- White Orchid
- Wolf Run
These games are commonly found on casino floors in Atlantic City, including Resorts. There are also dozens of other slot games that are exclusive to the internet.
Mohegan Sun player rewards program
There are six levels in the Mohegan Sun rewards. Each tier and the number of gems it takes to achieve it are described below:
- Amber: Starting point
- Garnet: 100 gems
- Amethyst: 600 gems
- Topaz: 2,400 gems
- Pearl: 5,000 gems
- Sapphire: 15,000 gems
All loyalty levels are monthly and carry over into the next month.
How to earn gems
Gems are earned based on the amount wagered. One gem is awarded based on the following handle:
- $10 at slots
- $20 at roulette
- $40 at video poker and blackjack
- Amber: 100 Gems
- Garnet: 67 Gems
- Amethyst: 33 Gems
- Topaz: 25 Gems
- Pearl: 17 Gems
- Sapphire: 14 Gems
The best game at Mohegan Sun is the six-deck blackjack game on the IGT platform.
It has a house edge of 0.34 percent with perfect play. Below is the amount a player would have to wager at each tier to earn $1 in cash through the loyalty program playing blackjack:
- Amber: $4,000
- Garnet: $2,680
- Amethyst: $1,320
- Topaz: $1,000
- Pearl: $680
- Sapphire: $560
A Pearl and Sapphire player would cut the house edge of the blackjack game in half. These numbers also represent video poker. The number is half this amount at roulette and one-quarter at slots.

Mohegan Sun Online NJ: background
NYX Gaming has also inked an agreement with Golden Nugget and will be supplying its online casino software by the end of the year as the company transitions away from its original partner Bally Technologies.
How Mohegan Sun came to the NJ online casino market
Mohegan Sun took over management of Resorts Casino in August of 2012, and would be the second brand to operate under Resorts’ interactive gaming license.
Resorts is also partnered with PokerStars in New Jersey, which officially launched its NJ online poker site in March 2016.
Each New Jersey casino is permitted to operate up to five brands under their license.
Resorts director of interactive marketing Lee Terfloth told eGR NA in May 2015 that the company’s own internal surveys indicated Mohegan Sun is a better-known brand than even Borgata among New Jersey residents.
Because of the branding strength Terfloth and Resorts expect their Mohegan Sun online casino skin to generate a solid market share in the market, and eventually contend with the trio of Golden Nugget, Tropicana, and Borgata.
While Resorts survey results may seems a bit surprising, it should be noted that Mohegan Sun not only operates its eponymously-named casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, but also the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs racecourse/casino in Pennsylvania, and has been tied to casino projects in both Massachusetts and New York as well.
Reasons for optimism
Strong brand recognition
Mohegan Sun launched its online casino site in conjunction with Resorts Casino (Mohegan Sun currently manages Resorts Casino) following some extensive internal market research where Resorts/Mohegan discovered Mohegan Sun had the best brand recognition in the state, despite not having a brick and mortar casino in the state.
If this is accurate, and Mohegan Sun does have better brand recognition than Borgata, it bodes well for its future.
Solid iGaming partner
Resorts was late to the iGaming party, launching a year and a half after its competitors, and the company settled on NYX Gaming as its online casino software provider. Resorts is of course partnered with PokerStars for online poker.
This has proven to be a solid choice.
Not only has ResortsCasino.com increased its revenue share every month since launching in February, a testament to NYX’s platform, but NYX seem to be impressing across the board, as it has also been selected to take over the Golden Nugget iCasino platform by the end of the year.
In just six months ResortsCasino.com has over a 5 percent market share in New Jersey.
- February: $50,909= .5% market share
- March: $154,071= 1.4% market share
- April: $212,739= 2% market share
- May: $324,662= 3% market share
- June: $400,600 = 4% market share
- July: $558,316 = 5.25% market share
A third reason for optimism is the PokerStars effect.
PokerStars is still rumored to be opening a brick and mortar poker room at Resorts in Atlantic City. A PokerStars-branded poker room would likely be one of the top-trafficked poker rooms in the city, perhaps challenging Borgata for the title of the center of the city’s poker universe.
This will likely lead to influx in traffic at Resorts Casino, and present ResortsCasino.com and MoheganSunCasino.com with a terrific opportunity to leverage PokerStars’ brand and promote its online casino offerings in the poker room and on the casino floor.
In addition to having an iGaming platform partner that is bullish on online gambling in New Jersey, Resorts is also taking online gaming seriously.
The casino has already opened a first of its kind iGaming lounge at Resorts, and I expect it to continue to go all-out with its marketing and innovation, particularly because of PokerStars’ involvement.
