Boyd Gaming has acquired Resort Digital’s online gaming license, which is owned by DGMB Casino, LLC, the company confirmed with PlayNJ on Monday. The transaction quietly closed on Sept. 1, according to a copy of the obtained transaction.
In a statement, David Strow, spokesperon for Boyd Gaming, said that the acquisition of Resorts Digital “is consistent with Boyd Gaming’s strategy of building a profitable regional iGaming business integrated with our existing nationwide portfolio.
“As part of this transaction, Boyd Interactive has acquired the New Jersey operations of ResortsCasino.comand MoheganSunCasino.com, complementing our existing Stardust Online Casino in New Jersey.”
While the deal is more than three weeks old, not much changes for customers in NJ online casino industry, which set a record for revenue last month.
Details of Boyd’s new gaming license in NJ
The transaction reports that Boyd Gaming entered into an agreement with DGMB on May 15, 2024, which officially closed earlier this month. The deal includes an iGaming license for Boyd Gaming.
The Resorts and Mohegan Sun Online Casino NJ skins are now operated by Boyd Gaming. However, DGMB Casino is still included in revenue sharing from other operators its partnered with – such as DraftKings, Hollywood, and PokerStars – because it provides market access.
Boyd Gaming already has a presence in the Garden State, operating Stardust Casino. It appears as if the company’s current license is getting revoked, but a new one has been issued to continue operating Resorts and Mohegan Sun.
“New Jersey has long been one of the nation’s leading iGaming states,” Strow said in a statement first obtained by Bonus and confirmed by PlayNJ, “and we look forward to further growing our presence in that state’s online gaming market in partnership with Resorts Casino in Atlantic City.”
The additions of Resorts and Mohegan Sun is going to be a compliment to Stardust Casino. Boyd Gaming essentially will earn approximately 2% of the online casino market share. The combination of Stardust, Mohegan Sun and Resorts generated $4.1 million last month. Boyd Gaming’s expanded portfolio is only going to help the company’s footprint in the online casino space.
Status quo for NJ iGaming players
As the details of the deal went down quietly, New Jersey players did not feel the effects of the changes. They are more structural in nature.
The amount of iGaming operators remains the same at 28, nothing happens to bettors’ accounts, either. So there is nothing to worry about in that regard.
The Garden State is reaching new heights in monthly iGaming earnings. The state set a record in online casino revenue last month, producing $198.4 million. Operators narrowly broke March’s record of $197.2 million.
Football season brings back the casual bettors that normally takes the summer off, with just baseball on the calendar. However, now that football is in full swing, online casinos are expected to benefit, too. Many sports bettors cross over into the online casino, which has been a huge point of emphasis for operators.
As things remain status quo for NJ gamblers, it wouldn’t be shocking for iGaming platforms to cross $200 million by the end of the year.
