A Marina District casino in Atlantic City is undergoing a multi-million dollar upgrade with plans to unveil a number of new hotel rooms before summer.
Golden Nugget Atlantic City announced the “first phase” of its hotel and room renovation project in a press release earlier last week. The casino expects to complete this phase by spring before moving on to additional phases.
All nine Atlantic City casinos have undergone varying degrees of capital improvements in the post-pandemic era. Although some operators in town have not publicly shared their exact costs, the collective total of Atlantic City casino capital reinvestment since 2020 exceeds $1 billion.
Golden Nugget AC lays out vision for hotel upgrades
According to state gaming regulator data, Golden Nugget Atlantic City boasts more than 700 hotel rooms and suites.
The casino’s press release did not specify how many rooms would be in the first phase.
The rooms will get a head-to-toe makeover with new furniture and lighting, bedside USB and USB-C outlets and refinished bathrooms with walk-in showers. The casino said the room renovations complement recent property improvements, such as the redesign at Chart House or the addition of Dos Caminos.
All told, per the press release, the renovations carry a goal of “enhancing the overall guest experience.”
Social media had the ‘scoop’ weeks ago
Tom Pohlman, general manager of Golden Nugget, responded to a Facebook post about the hotel renovation project earlier this month, telling a guest that phase one was expected to start on Feb. 20 and be done by April.
In the press release on Tuesday, Pohlman said they are “eager to launch this new, multi-phased hotel renovation project for our Atlantic City casino property.”
“We are excited to continue to enhance our property and unveil a refreshed and elevated room product that guests will enjoy.”
A little backstory on Golden Nugget
Based on local newspaper articles, Golden Nugget last underwent significant renovations more than a decade ago.
In 2012, The Press of Atlantic City reported that the casino benefitted from nearly $150 million in upgrades due to a recent ownership change.
Although it is the smallest casino property in Atlantic City, Golden Nugget is often highly regarded as a locals casino. During the summer, The Deck is arguably the second-busiest hangout in the entire city (besides the beach, obviously).
Golden Nugget is owned and operated by Fertitta Entertainment, the Houston-based hospitality and entertainment empire founded by billionaire Tilman Fertitta. Fertitta’s company purchased the AC casino from Trump Entertainment for $38 million in 2011.
Prior to Fertitta’s purchase, the property was known as Trump Marina (1997-2011) and, before that, Trump Castle (1985-1997).
