In the middle of a hot summer, the reports of sports wagering activity at sportsbooks in New Jersey revealed a tremendous increase in bets being placed. That proved to be a boon to sports betting operators and the state in August.

Sports wagering gross revenue for online and retail sportsbooks was $81.9 million last month, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

That’s a whopping 30.6% year-over-year increase. Total handle of $814.3 million in August was a 16% increase from a year ago.

Operators reported a 10.06% hold last month, the fourth consecutive month that hold percentage was in double-digits, tying a previous record for New Jersey sports betting.

Sports betting revenue in 2025 about the same as 2024 so far

Overall for 2025, sports wagering gross revenue rests at $708.7 million through the end of August.

That’s practically the same as it was a year ago, just a 1% decrease compared to the $715.8 million in 2024 through the first eight months.

Online sports wagering revenue made up the vast portion of the August 2025 activity. Nearly $80 million ($79.3 million) came from mobile sportsbooks in New Jersey.

FanDuel leads the way in August

FanDuel Sportsbook reported the most revenue in August from New Jersey sports betting, with DraftKings Sportsbook just a bit behind.

Fanatics Sportsbook reported a loss of just over $4 million, which suggests the sportsbook was victimized by a bettor who struck a large win in August.
